Should i buy 2006 nickels from the mint?.

i am a long time collector for older coins. but i am also a new collector for modern coins. the question is should i purchase directly from the u.s. mint for 2006 jefferson nickel. two roll-set at $8.95 plus $4.95 shipping. since i did not buy any 2003 to 2005 nickels. nor any statehood quarters from the mint. now i am planning to buy 100 set of 2006 nickels. should i go ahead and do that?. help me. thanks.

If you have no issues paying the premium then sure. Keep in mind how many millions will be made and collected. I prefer to be persistent and call the bank each week until they receive some. They get them in the same condition, just not in the fancy P & D wrapping.

Either way if it strictly for collector purposes then the U.S. mint is a fine way to go, just don't count on them rising much in value.

speculative matter, but for the grand you are thinking of spending, I would go for the platinum or gold image
  • I guess it depends on what you want to collect.
The coins, or the coins and the U.S. Mint packaging.

Some mint items become more valuable over time if contained in the original packaging, some don't.

  • I would make a friend at the bank. They call us when new issues come out and will even hold boxes for us.
  • that's not for speculation purposes nor intended for selling at a profit or loss. simply because i just love the new jefferson nickels. and i like to own a lot of it. actually not a lot. it's only $900.00. i also bought 200 pc of ike circulated dollars for fun. i like to touch it. it's big and heavy. those were only modern coins (ike dollar) that i have and plan to have the 2006 nickels too. see i quit collecting coin since 1995 and come back only late last year. i miss the statehood quarters and westward nickels. i played a lot at the stock market during those period.

welcome back then.... I Like your attitude. I share it too.... even though I have a passion for certain numismatic items, none being nickels except for say 1916 DDO/ 43P Doubled Eye and overdate, a speared bison and a few full steps, ....it is a mere playing field like the stock market. Win some, lose some, but laugh at the end of the day.
I've more than a few sets of the statehood quarters built in the whitman folders. All out of mint rolls. I am not suggesting that as a sales pitch, however if you haven't gotten the set, I could help you.

    Kindly,
    Joe

I have to agree with the other posts. I think you will be able to get those from the banks if you do a little leg work.

  • i don't think my nearby banks want to entertain me. they only serve the business owners. i tried many times. i am tired of it. i think i'm gonna buy directly from the u.s. mint or dealers.

I tried to get new nickels from my contact at the SF-FRB. Unfortunately, some other dude got there first and bought them all.

OK, fess up -- it was one of you guys, right?

    I know how you feel...

I even had one bank tell me that they dont give out rolled coin (new or circulated) to anyone but business clients. What did the trick for me was that I found a Bank that has a special service for coin collectors. As long as you open and keep an account with them they will let you have access to new coins on a first come first serve basis. You might want to look around to see if any of the banks do this. In the midwest I know Key bank does this....

Geez, I'd put $900 in an interest bearing account. After the next 2 Fed rate hikes, 5% interest should be no problem.

    Jennifer,

I've got 20 sets for the long haul... already in the vault for the next 50 years... just for the fun of it.

Do what makes you happy. Just realize, it may take a long time before you make anything from them.

Well, I would go to the local bank - at least you can't lose on $2 face per roll.image Probably can get a box if you know the right people.
