Which of those 2 $20 1904 do you like best? SMALLER PICS

I apologize for the bad pics. Hopefully they will be enough for you to form an opinion. Both were graded MS64 by ANACS.

I've edited this with more manageable pics.

    Thanks.

  • I like the 2nd one. The spot on the neck in the first coins obverse really stands out to me. Both have nice looking reverses

    IMO, Coin B...hands down.

Coin A has a cut behind the nose so I like B better.

  • Coin B. The cut behind the nose on Coin A is a little distracting. They are both nice coins, though.

Those look like new ANACS holders -- did you have a couple raw ones slabbed?

yes, I had a half dozen coins given to me by my grand father. Among those were 2 1904 $20, which are the highest quality of the lot. I'm going to sell one on eBay and keep the other one.

Are those in new ANACS holders?

Both coins have very minor flaws, but my advice to you would be to keep the coin with the best lustre, which I suspect is coin A but you can tell by looking at the coins in hand much moreso than we can via the net.

I'd sell the one with the gash by the nose

Both are nice, but the gash in the nose of A makes B much nicer.

I will go against the grain and say I like A better. The fields look cleaner, and the luster looks slightly better.

Allright - thank you all. I'm going to hold on selling those for the moment, and hopefully show them to someone who's better than me and will be able to give me a good advice coins in hand...

From the pictures I can say that I would not want to own A.

My suggestion is to sell them both. Use the money to buy one nice replacement PCGS/NGC coin in a less common date. The 1904 is simply too common.

Thanks. The gash doesn't look as bad when the coin's in the hand, but I get your point.

Very valid point but those 2 are the nicest coins my grandfather gave me and I'd like to keep one. It's more sentimental than anything... Maybe I should keep both... Arguably, he only bought gold for its bullion value.

I like the first one. I'm not crazy about the hit beside the nose, but I find the spot in the right obverse field of the second one distracting.

    Great pics by the way!

You're kidding right? I took them with my cheap, 3-yr old digital camera, simply against a white wall, moving a lamp around...

  • I agree with Robertpr in that A has better luster but that may depend on the photography (distance of the light source) making the cartwheels. I could be wrong though.

I can't get past the gouge in the nose distracting me so if I had to sell one it would be A.

I'll try taking pics of the coins side by side - that will keep most things the same...

Let's try this... I took the coins one after the other, in exactly the same position save for small irregularities in the shape of the holders. I then cropped the pics in order to present them side by side. Each pair corresponds to a different lamp position.

Miss Scarface (Coin A) is on the left.

Give both of these to your children. A fantastic heirloom.

I happen to like A just slightly more. If you were to cut the size of the picture of the coins down to actual size, the gash appears to be much more minor looking to my eye.

I like coin A for strike detail and luster. I like coin B for the eye appeal.

Is there a reason you didn't use PCGS ? I would think they both would grade well there. MS63/64 ?

i do not like either sell both

both have roll friction and impaired lustre on the obverse cheeks

but in answer to your question keep coin b
