Pricing the roll.

now we have u. s. mint roll, bank machine wrapped roll, hand wrapped roll or shot gun roll. the coins are the same. but what about the pricing on each?. anyone.....

like for example: why collectors have to pay more for u.s. mint nickels roll while they can get it more cheaper from the dealers or other collectors who are able to get rolls from their banks and sell it cheaper at e-bay or elsewhere?. or you yourself are able to get it face value at a bank. and the mint were selling $8.95 a set and it's selling like hot dogs.

Probably best to check completed auctions on eBay to get a good handle on what they're going for.

It depends on a couple of factors...

If you are talking about state quarters, a mint roll will be the most valuable.

If you are talking about 1916-D mercury dimes, a shotgun roll will be the most valuable.

If you are talking about coins that Eliasberg searched through and then rolled, obviously those would be the most valuable.

So tell us, which kind of coins are you referring to?

  • The only rolls I know for sure are the Lincoln wheats. The mint didn't wrap them - they were wrapped by the courier service (e.g. Brinks, Wells Fargo, etc, )and then distributed to the banks.

For the wheats, bank wrapped, OBW, and shotgun are synonomous, assuming they haven't been opened and rerolled. Most have - see ebay auctions where no end is shown or only one end is shown. On a true unopenedd roll, both ends should be tightly crimped with a tight "roll." Most have one tightly rolled end and the other is "flappy", for lack of a better term. It's been opened and an attempt was made to reroll the open end, either by hand or with one of those cheap plastic things.

For me, a truly unopened roll is worth at least three times one that has been opened, even in a common date/mm. I paid $60 for a truly unopened roll of 55-Ds but would probably pay only $15 or so if the roll had been opened, depending upon the condition of the roll.

I don't really know about rolls of other coins though.

  • the mint rolls have been out there for few years. i think it started 2000. but then the cdn or any magazine do not have prices for u.s. mint rolls. i do hope all kinds of paper wrapping will be the same in prices. because coins inside the rolls were of the same uncirculated. it just like the premier silver proof set and the silver proof set. the outer packaging is different. but the prices were the same.

one more question. before 2000. the bank machine roll and the privately shot gun or hand wrapped roll. are they also have different pricing before?. anyone. thanks.

People pay a premium for the mint rolls because of the wrapping. Unopened bank-wrapped rolls are the next most desirable because they are unsearched. Hand-wrapped rolls sell for the same as individual coins or less (quantity discount).

  • but why the cdn or coin magazines do not have two or three sets of pricing for those type of coin wrapping. like ms 60, 63, 65 and so forth for individual coin. they should have prices for mint roll, bank roll, hand wrapped roll.

example: $8.95 for mint roll - 2006 jefferson nickel set of two rolls
$8.50 for bank roll and $8.00 for hand wrapped roll.

but then again the mint roll were be too many. like 2004 am bison, 700,000 plus set were sold.

For your original question, the answer is that some people just collect the mint rolls. Some people collect Original Bank Wrapped (OBW) rolls while others just buy any old roll.
I buy mint rolls and OBW provided that neither has been opened (i.e. searched) because once they've been opened, their value decreases significantly. I rarely buy hand wrapped rolls since these have all been searched and you are likely not to find anything of value. It's possible, just not likely.
