PCGS 1931-D Lincoln 64RD sells for $600 - Take me now Lord, I've seen it all!!!

Even if the buyer thinks it will upgrade to a 65RD, it's JUST worth $600.

What gives?

I bought my 65RD (a PQ if I do say so myself) for $616 just under a year ago and I felt I paid up a bit.

Are these wheats really going this crazy?

Mike

The bids took a big jump from $250.00 to $590.00 does this indicate they were really hot for the coin and money is no object or other?

  • Gemini - It may have been a bidding war, but still! It's a $200 coin! I was one of the low-ball bidders and I hate these "bidder's identity protected" auctions. Seems to me that this type of auction is a "natural" for shilling.

I can see hiding the bidder's identity on a true rarity that is going for huge $s - but a $200 coin (or even one that goes for$600)? Ridiculous, IMHO.

  • Looks like a nice coin. Maybe the bidders got sent better pictures. With pcgs inconsistency maybe it's an ms66.
  • LincolnsRule - It does look nice and someone paid roughly 65 money for it. If it is a 66, then it was a huge bargain, But really, TWO points? With the way PCGS has been on copper lately, my guess is it might go 65, but I seriously doubt it goes 66 (no, I'd say virtually impossible!) But, I've been wrong before...and will be again.

I am no expert but the history of the buyer seems a bit shill-like...

  • It can happen. I had a nice ms66 Memorial go down to ms64. I have a 14-p that I would consider a candidate for ms66 and it's graded ms64 right now too. Probably the simplest expanation is the correct one (shill seems like a pretty logical one, but someone still had to bid that high).

  • Here's the bidding on this. Who won? I assume it's the fourth line because he was at $600 earliest. Is this correct, or could he also have upped his maximum bid three times tonight?

I hate this hidden bidder crap. If you read the reason the seller gives for hiding the bidders, it doesn't make any sense, at least to me.

BTW, I'm mensa0 and was trying to steal a $200 coin for $118. So, it goes for $600!! How come my auctions never go like this?

Anybody got one in 6 for sale??

  • Last two 66's in my data base went for $3,800 and $3,400 - I'll stick with my 65, at least for now. A PQ 65 that someone thinks may upgrade can go for $1,000-$1,200 or so. Tempting!!

I was somewhat joking when I said that, but that is a hole in my set. It is a hole because there is no supply right now, and plenty of demand. I have looked at most all of the 31-d's that have come on the market (MS64 and up), and passed on all of them either because of price or quality. So I think that $600 price for a 64 is probably just reflective of supply and demand. At least two people "had-to-have-one" for their set right now.

There is a 66 in the upcoming B&M auction. It will be interesting to see what it goes for.
