<< <i>They seldom come up for sale. 25 is a low print run for 1998. Nice looking card, I am guessing there are a lot of Thomas collectors missing that card. >>
Allen, I always appreciate your help. Did you see that I sold a PSA 10 1997 Pinnacle Cert. Mirror Gold of Frank Thomas for $140 the other night? I know we'd discussed those cards a bit in the past. I recently bought several raw from Dave & Adam's, so I thought I'd pass at least one on.

I can't believe there are a lot of Thomas collectors anymore. The Big Baby.
The Crusade set has been a very popular one with both player collectors and set builders since it came out, and the buyer of this card has been chasing all 3 versions of this set for years, if he doesn't have them already. I remember getting into some contests with him when I was chasing the green set. Another factor in the price could be the apparent lack of refractor lines that plague this set. I check out these cards occasionally, and I can say the reds are hotter than ever right now, and have always been strong sellers, but for some reason they have stayed under the radar of most of the hobby. To a lesser extent the Purple and Green versions, too. It's a beautiful design, and singles have always been hard to find. One problem the set has is that it was a multi-brand insert, skip numbered across various brands, IIRC, and the "Call To Arms" cards are unnumbered, so it was hard to even come up with a checklist. Plus they were inserted into Donruss products that, by today's standards, were overproduced and not too desirable even at the time. I saw a guy open a whole 20-box case of 1998 Donruss Update looking for one. He finally hit a common player green in the 19th box. But he opened about 3 cases of other product in the shop that day and had better luck with those.
BTW, they do grade out well. Like Chrome cards they are on a stiff white cardstock, and unlike Chromes they rarely seem to have the little pinpoint pits that drag grades down. But the refractor lines are very common and hurt. Among my Greens I have a Magglio Ordonez that I got graded by BGS last year. It's a 9.5 with 2 10s, and I was appalled it didn't get a straight 10, and I know how hard 10s are. The only time I've ever owned a card that I felt was completely flawless, I mean down to a microscopic level. If I sent it to PSA they'd grade it a 13. When I look at the 10s BGS is giving out now, it really makes me wonder. That was my last submission to BGS. If I ever go to a show where they're set up, I'm going to be doing some whining. But anyway, though Ordonez has faded recently, it's still an awesome card.
