Way to go Earl!!

Mr. Van Allen attributed the ones below as an 1882CC Pinned Wing VAM-3A (revised).
You might want to take a look at your 1882CC's for a pinned wing as well while your at it.
Steve Strong (forum member DWSWS) and I each have an 1882CC with the same die gouge as shown below kinda similar-but not exact to Earl's 1884CC discovery.
I posted these here as now it's more a curiosity and mystery for the pinned wing die gouge (not to jump on Earls' thread, which I have a habit of doing, but to present this mystery to others here). A mystery like...could it be an intentional mark left behind by a certain mint employee after a previous polishing or other maintenance action to a die. Maybe like dots appearing on dies of other coins.

I love getting those letters..................Congrats, nice find.
Dang it you guys slow down and allow me to find a few VAMs.
Herb
Too bad Van Allen lives out in Ohio, I recently saw a letter that indicated Mallis lived in Albertson, NY before his death (which is only a stones throw from me).
I just popped my CC case and pulled out my 84CC heheh- I lookie at the picture you post, and I lookie at my Morgan- bingo a new Vam in my collection- a 4A- in the exact same wing placement.
now when the microscope attachment gets here- we are having a party of Vam shots- and I will do a photobucket thingy for just the ones I have found.
So a rarity of 5- in 63 money? $400 maybe?

Slip- I know you jest, but all I have is a nice 10xX35x micro- I have bad eyes- and it does help when ya can see it under slight magnification.
So far I have what I hope to be at least 10 or more Vams that can go into a registry, now I want to gather these up- send em off to mr. Allen for authentication(letter) and then send em to PCGS- since they are already in PCGS holders, get the attribute and put em back in my growing set.
oh Laura- I collect classics and MODERNS, so I must be a wannabee, maybe she can broker these fro me later in life.

I can't help but pull out mine.

<< <i>Is the 1882 CC pictured with Mad4Morgans name the VAM 3 ? Just curious caus when I see the pics. and VAM #'s >>
Wow Nice coin!!
Yes it is a VAM-3A (Revised) It was revised by Leroy Van Allen because of the pinned wing die gouge.
It's cool that others are finding the same type die gouges.
Steve Strong's pinned wing VAM-3A (revised) is severly clashed and actually may be an 1882CC VAM-6A. One day we need to send them in together to Mr. Van Allen for a closer look.
Now you really got to wonder why that particular die gouge is there on the CC dollars.

Who has a hot 50 list and possibly and updated edition of the Vam book?
<< <i>Now you really got to wonder why that particular die gouge is there on the CC dollars. >>
I found a 21-P 53 yesterday. Roughly the same area for the gouge. Maybe someone should write a book on "pinned wing" Morgans!

Steve Strong's 1882CC "Pinned Wing" is heavily clashed and looks like a VAM-6A but matches our VAM-3A (Revised) except for the degree of clashing.
We suspect the VAM-6A and VAM-3A revised may share the same reverse.
This may be the proof we were looking for.
