Do people still read SCD?

Is this a viable advertising source? Does anyone read the ads and check the persons website? I am wondering/evualating this? Anyone know of any others that are affordable?

  • I started reading SCD again about a month ago and although it is an Atkins Diet of its former self, it is a great source for auctions and industry news. Not sure how many suscribers they have but there are about 20% of the pages compared to the early 1990's.
My focus, 1970 Topps Baseball Raw and Graded, pre 1989 PSA Hockey and 1933 INDIAN GUM ! Yikes!!
  • I read it religiously. One of the first places I look is the Collector to Collector ads.

It's great reading - if you like Coaches Corner auctions (I believe that's the one). They list 20 pages of crap in every issue, and what's left of the magazine is more ads. I think they are down to a few pages of worthwhile content per issue, and that content is usually outdated by the time you get the paper.

I ask about SCD from time to time here.

I have been a continuous subscriber since 1991.

I got over 90 people a 6 week free trial sub last time I asked questions about how people felt about the publication.

I am not the SCD ombudsman but having a deep concern for our hobby, I believe that SCD is one of the barometers for measuring its strength/viability.

Although it's thinner than ever, and full of auction crap, it's still a great pub for interesting short articles on what's going on in the hobby, events, the history, sports, new books, skeds, autographs by mail etc. Yes, you can pick up a lot of this on the internet.

But, the "real" feel for a piece of journal is something I still look forward to each week. And, the special subscription rate is less than a buck a week.

I enjoy getting SCD, Tuff Stuff, Old Cardboard and SMR, to name a few, on a regular basis.

I won't argue with the auction crap but one important point - if Coach's Corner stings a person and they're an SCD subscriber - you can go to them and get some satisfaction that you wouldn't normally have - their SCD rating is important to them.

    But also,

    1. They have been running a tremendous series of articles on all of the recent negro league players who have been inducted into the HOF.

    2. They offer great updates on the big shows that go on around the country, with photos, reviews, who was there, etc.

    3. They have been running, for months, interviews with all of the leading auto authenticators from around the country. Some of them have been quite entertaining.

    4. Many people asked about the RC classification on the new sets and unless you get Beckett or read one of those kinds of boards - SCD offered info on that - in fact they recently reclarified the issue.
I'm willing to bet that there's a lot of people here - off the top of their head - could not tell you what constitutes an RC under the newest guidelines from 2006 on... - or the fact that the RC logo is industry and not brand specific.

    5. The regular columns with updates on the current book releases is invaluable if you want to pick up a first edition book. They recently listed all the sports books that were on the bestseller list for at least one week - some I never knew were bestsellers!

I don't mind people thinking it's a piece of crap - cause in some ways it is - but there's a lot of good also.

Mike, you're right - and I commented as a longtime SCD subscriber, not just a casual reader. There is some good content, though I suppose we will never see (or need to see) the SCD of 10 years ago. It seems while the magazine gets thinner and thinner, their reliance on advertising grows more every issue. I just singled out Coach's Corner because it came to mind first (I have no experience with them whatsoever), but there are other mega auction ads that take up a lot of space within their pages these days. But, as you mentioned, there really is no other printed source (especially weekly) that follows the hobby like they do. Hopefully, we will see this publication become a must-read for collectors someday again, though I doubt it in today's online environment.

I started reading it again after a 10 year haitus about 3-4 months ago... it definitely has some redeeming articles in it, and it's a helpful resource for the auction schedules. I do not like their affiiliation with Coach's Corner or Ted Taylor (STAT), because they deal with GEM grading and they're all tied together, but at the same time, I understand their need for ad revenue and without these guys, they would have a tough time filling the pages.

    Mike, what is Old Cardboard?

As for SCD have been reading it since it was a Bi Weekly in the 80s.Even though it is very watered down now a days I still find it very informative.

Just go ahead and say it Mike, it's nice to have something to kill the time on the throne!!! Of course, today's SCD kills a lot less time than the SCD of 10 years ago, but still . . .

  • I've been receiving mine since the late 80's. I re-up my subsrciption more out of habit than anything else. Some of the articles are worthwhile, but I search every week for any new dealer advertising. From that standpoint I believe it would be worthwhile to place and ad to drive some traffic to a website.

It's one of the best little magazines around. Plus, they have other on-line articles and references that I have used numerous times.

The last pub was partially in 3-D! It was off the chart for the old timers who haven't looked thru 3-D glasses in a long time.

There's just stuff out there I can't do without. And I would still rather pay a buck for SCD and eat one less Mcburger this week if you know what I mean.
