Canada's Miracle - Canada beats U.S. at WBC

What a great game ... Sports talk shows are already calling it Canada's greatest baseball victory ever. Of course, we haven't really won much before, but still very exciting. Final score: Canada 8 U.S. 6.

  • I'm a Canadian that loves baseball. Heck, I enjoyed watching that short-lived Senior League in Florida that someone organized 15 years ago, so I was excited to watch this tournament from the beginning.

As for other Canadians, I think it's safe to say that at the beginning of the tournament they weren't paying much attention to it. But now many Canadians are excited about it. This win is the lead story on the sports stations up here.

Any tournament that spawns a word like fragical can't be all bad. Of course linguistic derring-do should be expected from someone with that user ID.

  • Agreed ... the word was used to showcase just how fragile these magical moments can be .... image It was a "fragical" moment.

I'm afraid Steve Green won't be joining Paul Henderson any time soon as one of Canada's heroes of international sport, but I was happy to see the Canucks get one vs. USA's spoiled pros.
  • At some point during the tournament does it convert to a best-of-so-many games format? Just wondering, and not suggesting that the outcome would of have different in this instance had it been a best-of. Enjoy it Canada.

Have there been any other ones?

  • Do the Red Sox still own the rights to Stern? Maybe they did not need Coco Crisp after all! image

Maybe the Blue Jay's first WS. But none of the players were Canadian (that I know of).
  • I turned it on via MLB.com at work and it was Can 8 USA 0... I watched the USA score 6 and then turned it off... maybe I'm good luck image USA should own south africa
  • Canada has beaten the U.S. in a couple of amateur baseball tournaments, but nothing that has involved major league players.

And there was one Canadian player on the 1993 World Series Champion Toronto Blue Jays - Rob Butler.

Stern will be on the Red Sox roster - at least to start this season.

Cool. I think Stern is a former 'Husker as well. image

If he can avoid getting picked off at first, he might make the team to fill in for the inevitable Trot Nixon injuries.
  • Stern is a former Husker. Here is what I understand about him: He was a Rule 5 pick last year (Red Sox picked him up from the Braves). He was injured for the vast majority of last season (he only had 15 major league at bats). His injury time, I believe, does NOT count as service time with a major league club. So it's my understanding that the Red Sox have to keep Stern on their roster for what equates to a full major league season or they risk losing him.

I didn't realize A-Rod was on the USA team. Oh well, better luck for us next year!
