Why do people rip on other peoples cards

There is a message on this board about a 1968 PSA 10 Willie Stargell, on another PSA board about a 1977 Reggie Jackson PSA 10. People are firing opinions back and forth (a lot of them uncomplimentary) about the cards.

Here is what I believe and can rip on me if it makes them feel better.

If we all believe in PSA as the gold standard for grading which I think most of us do then we have to take the majority good with the small of amount of percieved errors. No matter what a scan cannot do 100% justice to a card. Will PSA make mistakes. I am sure. Some benefit, some are slighted (although they always the right to break out and regrade). It's like umpires in any sport. If you believe they are on the up and up then you still are going to have issues from time to time but is part of the game.

Like Bill Parcells says. You are what your record says you are. Accordingly the card is what PSA says it is.

Do some dealers get breaks? There could be some truth to it, but you'll have a hard time proving it. If the card doesn't meet your standard move on.

I don't think a lot of people are going to switch to GAI or GEM or SGC or Louie's Grading Service over a few perceived misgrades.

I don't get the point of this post. People see cards that they think are overgraded, and they post pictures of them for discussion. Why? Well, because this is a sportscard forum-- where people discuss sportscards.

    theczar,

i've mentioned this before and i'll say it again.

this board has it's share of people who complain about PSA cards, the service, the standards, the off center, the time it takes to get a card graded, the "how is this not oc" thread about 10 times a day........

Until someone mentions a nice BGS or SCG card and then the defense of PSA reaches record numbers.

I've got a 100 PSA cards and zero of any other, so I'm a PSA guy all the way. But they do make mistakes, and a lot of them. But they are better than any other company, so their mistakes make good conversation pieces, like Boo said.

It's also why I'm not overly impressed with any PSA 10. They are indeed great looking cards, but seeing people pay 10X PSA 9 prices for a card that would be a PSA 9 any other day is still insane. My opinion only, of course. I like the looks of my cards in a PSA holder, but if the whole thing ever comes crashing down, (i.e., "The 314 grader is a BGS spy BS") then I'd rather have my money in nice looking PSA 6, 7, 8, and 9 cards without the 10 premium.

    I've gotten off topic, sorry.

and what does it change? should the seller of that stargell or jackson be ashamed for selling it as PSA has graded it? should suddenly he be directed to the forums and say "gosh 9 out of 10 people think my card is overgraded. granted they have never held the card in their hand, but i guess they are right. let's put a B-I-N price on it of PSA 9 SMR and i'll be doing the right thing."

if the seller is presenting the card honestly, has possession of it, can show a back scan if needed then he has done nothing wrong. but because it doesn't measure up to someones standards who has never seen more than a picture of it than somehow we should believe that they know more than PSA and it is ok to treat card as if it had leprosy. it's liking complaining about some guy on welfare that wins powerball.

we shouldn't have a amber alert, call homeland security or some how make the card anything less than it is, just because you sent in a card two years ago and it got an 8 and you think yours was better. if you do bust it out and send it in and hope it doesn't back a 7.

You also left out the theory that because DSL and 4SC send in massive quantities of cards, that they get the red carpet treatment for better grades. Well let's see if Vic D gets any special treatment on his 1725 cards( hey Vic, this is strictly a joke, so don't shoot me!!)

Who the hell was disparaging the seller? Nobody did that. It was just mentioned that the card appeared OC for a PSA 10. Jesus-- the seller doesn't need to be 'ashamed', or even aware, of the fact that this conversation took place. This is a sportscard forum, and people discuss sportscards-- overgraded ones, undergraded ones, ungraded ones, and so on. We're not looking to change the face of the hobby here, just looking for a way to pass the work day in between coffee breaks.

    Czar

Good question but I have a question.

You wouldn't have asked this if it weren't affecting you...

If it's because of the criticism? Heck, that's what we do - at times. We look at something and ask...WTF?

Heck, if we all agreed on everything and accepted PSA's judgement 100% of the time...

    Why need a discussion forum?

If you are questioning the motives? Who knows?

Some people see the glass half full, others half empty.

Some come here with an anti-PSA agenda...

    I say, bring'em on!

Otherwise, it would get awfully boing around here.

    stone,
it does not affect me. my cards are from the old days when centering didn't matter. i don't have an artistic eye so i can pick out some real losers to be graded. i buy way too much, and sell way too little. the seller of the stargell wasn't picked on, but DSL and 4SC are mentioned in this post.

like i would love to hit powerball, i would very much like to their access to raw material.

DSL and 4SC have been the recipients of accusations that some dealers get preferential treatment in the grading room. This has been brought up many times on these boards, and occasionally someone likes to post what they see as an overgraded card as a way of bolstering that argument.

Even tho it has been said that a grader only sees the cards...

    I don't know...

If ebay ID guy x,y,z submits 1100 cards at a time, it's hard for me to believe that the grader is not aware of who this is? If that's an incredulous statement - well...what can I say?
