My first Merc, won on Ebay

Link

It's a dirt-common coin, but it's my first Mercury dime, and for $10, how can you go wrong?
If you haven't noticed, I'm single and miserable and I've got four albums of bitching about it that I would offer as proof.

Gotta love the Messanger - Roman Goddes - Mercury. A fine example.
  • If I get the coin in the picture, I'll be happy. Sure, it's a widget, but it's a lot nicer looking in the pic than a lot of the other Mercs sold on Ebay.

Estate sales are a bunch of hype and from the looks of the picture you got hyped. These common non full band coins can be had for 15 to 20 bucks slabbed, MS65 and sometimes MS66, if you look around. The coin you won only looks to be a AU coin and worth much less than the 10 bucks you spent.

    Sorry for the bad news.

Beware the siren song of the petite femmes!

Heed the advice of Fairlaneman--especially when it relates to Mercury dimes!

Congratulations on the purchase! (Even though you may have overpaid by at least the shipping amount, you're only out a few bucks.)

It is great that you want to get into Mercury dimes.

If you live near a city that hosts a coin show, you should check it out. You can buy raw uncirculated Mercury dimes and you won't have to pay the shipping charge.

Congrats on your first Mercury Dime. I would take Ken's (Fairlaneman's) comments seriously. When I first started collecting Mercury Dimes, I thought the best ones were blast white. In matter of fact I had a comment on my sig line "Make Mine Blast White." Over a fairly short period of time Ken showed me the light--buy nice original coins that haven't been dipped or cleaned and you won't go wrong.
Here is one example of a nice original coin.

At least that's what my redbook says.

    Fairlaneman:

I don't quite understand your comment about a slabbed Mercury dime for $15. Why would someone slab a $15 coin? I mean, if I can get one, great, but I don't understand what someone's motivation would be, given the cost of getting a coin slabbed.

Don't look at is as you got taken, as much as taking as a learing lesson. The small amount you paid is a very inexpensive learning lesson. image You could have purchased a very expensive coin to learn the lesson!

I understand your thinking about slabbing a coin that is worth only 5 or 10 bucks but it certainly happens. Bulk submissions get slabbed for 8 bucks a coin I believe and if a dealer has a whole roll or two that most of the coins are 67 in their opinion then they get sent in. This is where some 65's or 66's would come from. Also years back Mercs in 65 and 66 were worth a whole bunch much more that what they are worth now.

Some people are crazy and that includes me. Right now I have a Merc in that could fit into the same description that we are talking about if I completely blew it on the grade. I'll know in about a month.

If you must buy raw Mercs on Ebay a couple of good sellers are ASC Coins, carolinacoin and collectorcoin-usa up in Montana. These three will send you what you are paying for. Outside of these three I have no other suggestions about Ebay. I am sure there are a few others but most Merc Dime sellers on Ebay overgrade to the max.

    Hope this helps you.

    quite simple....

some of us send in a Winged Liberty thinking we have a GEM only to get the beat down from the graders!

I've got a few more Winged Libertys in for grading as we speak..... and I'm chewing my nails...... (scared lucy)

    Ken,

Sorry about that, but you know first hand how lucky bhartman35 is with getting a 3-credit course for only $10.
