The History of a Cleaned Coin

Recently at a coin show I purchased a coin well cleaned and coated with something on the reverse. It looked like this:

I then took this coin and placed it into a teflon coated pan, added water and broght to a boil. Nothing appeared to be happening so I began adding things from around the kitchen. As the water boiled I added Garlic Powder, Garlic Salt, Onion Powder, Onion Salt, Black Pepper, Basil, Liquid Almond and Coconut Extracts, Vinegar, Benefiber and several other items. I removed the coin and put it on the gas burner of the stove and turned up to high for a few minutes and then placed in Dove Dish Soap to cool. This is the results:

I thought since not much to loose I'd try one more thing. Here is something I never thought of before and never heard of anyone trying. Put the coin in a cotton ball soaked with Birkwood Perma Blue Liquid Gun Blue solution. Here is the results and kind of looks like a just old coin to me. Anyone think I'm nuts???????

Kinda makes me want to give up coin collecting and go back to woodworking.

    " Anyone think I'm nuts???????"

You don't really want an answer to that question, do you?

You have apparently patinated the coin by accident. There are books on how to do this as it is common practice among those who produce bronze sculptures.

The gun blue is permanent. I would have gone with that very last--after trying Mazzola corn oil, Stockman's steak sauce, wart remover, Heinz ketchup and Hellman's mayonnaise and KY jelly.

When all else fails, a little coffee mate makes a black cup of coffee turn to a lovely copper color. Try that !

I almost forgot that there was also Thyme, Rosemary, Nutmeg and Olive Oil in that first bath for the coin. All photos were taken outside.
The first 2 on my neighbors car hood. The second on a piece of wood holding down the top cover on my bar-b-que grill. The second was on a paper towel also on my neighbors car hood.
Sounds strange but his car is on my car port and my car is in his garage.

Maybe you could get a spot on that new show American Inventer. It's on the line of American Idol. You rank up there with Thomas Alva Edison on all the ways you found that doesn't work at making a coin look BU.

I was careful not to get fingerprints on this coin. I know how bad that makes them look. Back in college we melted down copper pennies with concentrated Sufuric Acid, put the residue in distilled water and filtered it 3 times. Then allowed the moisture to evaporate at a slow and controlled rate allowing the final product of CuSO4 to form a fantastic clear blue crystal. I still have it and always wonder what the dates where on the pennies.

My dad used to make German Sausage, using a very similar recipe. Are you sure you didn't swallow and "expel" that lincoln?image
