Please critique these images and give me some pointers

I'm getting better images these days, but they're still nowhere close to real life. Photo guys, please weigh in.

I would suggest you consider higher grade common Morgans.image Sorry, I don't do camera shots of coins.
I collect Capped Bust series by variety in PCGS AU/MS grades.
  • Anybody else? C'mon camera guys.

Oh, yes the Morgan is common and low grade, but that's because I don't collect Morgans.

    Good color, looks like AU

Pics look oblong. and they are huge 1/2 megabyte each.
    (2) 400x400 pixel pics side by side, 250k total more than enough.

you are definately on the right track, good job!

  • Not bad pics. A wee bit out of focus and could use a little more light to bring out more details and luster. I also agree about the pis being oblong. Nice job though. image

Its all in the lighting. The details are ever so slightly out of focus, try extending the distance from the camera to the coin and add a few inches to the distance on the lighting.

You are using two lights at opposite sides of the coin (3 and 9). The way lighting works a luster band is created perpindicular to the source of the light. If you were to move one of your lights to the 12 or 6 position you would have better lighting and luster. Also it looks like your lights are set to where the light is "skimming" the surface of the coin. Get the lights higher and closer in to the camera and that will help you greatly.
