Littleton question

Yes I know that littleton is like the coin vault. They sell overpriced coins to novices. Some dealers like littleton because they can afford to pay top dollar. My question is, how accurately do they grade? If you can't see a coin on Ebay due to glare off of the "original Littleton packaging", would you expect decent grading, or blatant overgrading?

They are very conservative graders,I would not hesitate to buy one of their coins sight unseen.

They sell a lot of "value added" coins. They'll sell something like 30 different silver
quarters in a folder for about double what you'd pay if you filled the set yourself.
They also sell a lot of coins at retail pricing and this can be a little surprising to col-
lectored accustomed to paying prices based on wholesale. They also sell a lot of
these coins through ads in national publications like the Readers' Digest. Approvals
are a mainstay for the company.

Cladking, thanks for the response, but you said everything I already knew. My question is whether the guy who is paying $80 apiece for AU common date Morgans is really getting AU coins.

It is a little more hit and miss when you're buying. This was especially true years
ago. It seems they do somewhat better in recent years but I've not seen a lot of
    their product.

I'd guess that the higher priced stuff is graded fairly close to or at market.

On the whole Littleton's grading is fairly accurate, especially on the circulated coins.

As I said in the other Littleton thread, they pay top dollar and then some for common coins. They tend to be finicky at what they will buy at their listed prices. Littleton often has a buy ad in the back of the major coin magazines and their buy prices are often above what a collector has to pay for the coins at a show. They have also been known to bid top dollar on large circulated hoards that come up for auction. Overall, Littleton sells common coins that are decent for the grade at very high prices. I'm sure there are anecdotes about overgraded Littleton coins, but those tend to be the exceptions, overall they grade tight and price high.

seems to be somewhat close, but always graded on the high side.
quite a while back I bought several Morgan dollars from them, an 1890CC, and an 1878CC they were both graded as ms63.
In the last year I sent both to NGC and they came back an ms62. I cracked the 1890CC and sent to PCGS, came back ms62.

    Hayden, YOU'RE CRAZY !!

As for Littleton, for what they charge for circulated coins you can buy Uncirculated everywhere else.

I have absolutely NOTHING good to say about LCC ! image

If you choose to purcase from Littleton, you're gonna pay more.

If you still wish to purchase....the coins are accuratly graded.

Keep in mind that this question wasn't about buying from directly from Littleton or buying at Littleton's prices. It was about buying something already in Littleton packaging on eBay.

And given that, depending on the price, I might. Their grading is usually reasonable, so if you can get something they graded on the "secondary market" at a price more representative of the coin's value and not Littleton's price, it might be just fine.

Yes, you can buy Uncirculated other places...and still get circulated coins in return.

I always tought they put properly graded coins too,
However I have a buffalo & Liberty Nickel from a collection

These may be older ones. I've seen stuff in old holders that they sure won't buy now.

Only reason a coind wouldn't be what Littleton Grades it at is if someone swapped a coin out.

Hopefully this won't turn in to another boom, I mean bash Littleton thread. They are so boring.

$3.00 face in silver for a total of $14? Not too shabby. Forget the grades here; you got this well below melt.

[Edit to add: This seller would have been FAR better served highlighting the six Walkers in the subject line instead of the Susie.]

Willing to make a bet on that...opps no betting.
Yes they are older holders, but who is going to swap common buffalo
and liberty nickels and reseal in a littleton pack...?????????

As to Littleton, there was a thread on another forum about that organization and every single response was very, very negative about the prices, condition of coins, service and just about anything else. I would refer you to the other forum but not sure if that's legal here.
