A little project for everyone...

I want those of you who have a scale... to please participate.

Take 10 lb's of modern change. Dont add anything, take anything, ect... and well see what people come up with. How many pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters, halves, and dollars were there, and what was the total value for the 10lbs?? I am just trying to figure up an average when I take my 150lbs to the coin star......

Most banks will take your change and not charge you a fee...

Just food for thought if you would like to stretch that 150lbs out.

banks or a casino will take it.

  • I would roll it myself... I dont care about that... im just trying to get a guess as to the $ within a couple hundred bucks.

Entirely depends on your sample. Someone else will have a totally different sample. You can weigh out a couple of pounds and count and multiply to get an idea. The low end would be about half pennies at about 160 pennies to the pound, rock bottom would be about $240 for 150 pounds all cents. High end would be mostly dimes and quarters approximately 15 pounds for $1000 face or about $70 a pound. Ballpark guess would be about half dimes and quarters giving about $35 worth per pound or about $5000. Again, Coinstar will take 8% or more.
  • Strangely enough, your best dollar to weight ratio lies within the dime. Not sure why I find this strange, and it is only slightly more valuable than the quarter which is what I wouldve thought.

Cents are .4 Cents per gram. Nickels are 1 Cent per gram. Dimes are 4.40 cents per gram. Quarters are 4.38 cents per gram.

    Take a sample and calculate.

My randomly accumulated pocket change tends to have this ratio, for what it's worth:
    (by count, not weight)

    42% quarters
    26% dimes
    14% nickels
    18% cents

It's been rather consistent over time.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

And CoinStar will take about $200.00 from that amount.

CoinStar takes about 8.7 per cent the last time I looked at my local store.

To get the most out of your money, roll them up yourself, and take them to the bank.

Actually, my credit union has a Coinstar machine, and they waive the fees for customers with $5,000+ in deposit and loan balances, and for people under 18.

I just wish my credit union's brick-and-mortar office wasn't almost 2,000 miles away.
