I have to buy that Numismatic Art in America book...Vermeule pulls no punches with his opinions

I was reading the QDB Commemorative book. For several of the issues, he notes comments by Cornelius Vermeule. Cornelius definitely was not shy wtih his opinions. For example, for the 1915-S Pan-Pac Half Dollar, Vermeule comments on the obverse as follows: "she has a fat posterior, heavy upper arms, and thus an unpleasantly stiff, dumpy manner." Additionally, for the 1923-S Monroe Doctrine half dollar, he comments as follows: "the piece is not attractive...[the reverse] resembles daubs of clay on a board, or relief outlines in glass. Adams, with his staring eye, is scarcely a portrait, and Monroe would not be recognized even by an expert."
Ouch.
Ouch.

Now this is an announcement that I can get whipped up into a frothy frenzy over! I think Whitman should do more of this and work on trying to republish the classic numismatic texts that have been long out of print. To paraphrase QDB, with Whitman's distribution network and economies of scale, it is in the best position to bring back the best numismatic works to the masses. Good for you, Dentuck.
