How do I ?

New to coin collecting.

How do you go about getting your coins graded and slabbed?

Where to go, how much does it cost that kind of info.

Any great advice for a newby?

Welcome to the hobby, and to the boards, holeinone1972!

First thing I would say to a new collector is don't rush to get coins slabbed. It's very easy to waste good money.

What got you interested in collecting? What do you collect, and where do you get your coins?

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

    Welcome!

First, read all you can. Buy only PCGS graded coins of low value, less than a day's wage.

    Second, read all you can.

Third, you can get your coins graded by PCGS by joining one of their clubs. If you have eight or more coins to get graded, join their platinum club.

    Fourth, hang around here.

    Fifth, enjoy yourself.

And finally, read all you can.

Don't we have a fresh meat picture yet?

Get some basic books on coins and read those first.....

As others have answered your question, my advice to a new collector is to go buy three books:

Coin Collectors Survival Manual by Travers (there's a brand new edition, I believe).
The Expert's Guide to Collecting & Investing in Rare Coins by Bowers.
A Guide Book of United States Coins 2006 (a.k.a Red Book) by Yeoman.

Fresh meat with coins not with message boards.

As far as coins, my Dad has gotten me in to it. A nice hobby to do with a man you respect.

I just bought my first slabbed coin today via ebay, it was graded by NGC.
    ms-69 Silver dollar.

I have a few sets of silver proof mints sets the state quarter variety.

I am interested in coins that will be worth something to me, and my kids in the years to come.

Now I need to learn about what kinds of coins are good investments, and where to hunt for them.

Most people here will suggest you avoid investment and that old rarities have the best shot.

I'd suggest that you try to have fun and you'll probably learn about coins and do pretty well.

First, you have to pay money to join the PCGS Collectors Club

Then you have to pay money to ship the coins to PCGS

Then you have to pay money to have PCGS grade the coins

Then you have to pay money for PCGS to ship them back

Now your coins are in slabs, but you're broke image

Please read the books that MikeInFL listed above. You will save yourself a lot of disappointment and money by doing so.
