    I had the privilege of viewing that coin back in 2003. It was on display in Charleston, S.C. at the location where they are working to preserve
    the Hunley. It was in a tall glass case that was roped off so you couldn't get close enough to touch the case itself. There was a S.C. State Trooper standing guard next to it. No pictures were allowed but I did buy a replica of it. Incredible U.S. History there!

    This is the only coin in the world I'd rather own than a '33 Saint!

    A piece like this properly belongs with someone in the family. Though I suspect Dixon had no children, he may have some brothers and sisters who have living direct descendants.

    It's great if they'd want to loan it to a museum, but really, this is a piece that family should own.

    I would agree that it belongs to the family. It is part of the personal effects of a military man who died in the line of duty. If they had been recovered in the 1860's they woud have been returned to the family then, I see no reason why they should not be returned now just because a hundred and forty years have passed.

    The problem with ownership is most of these objects are protected as National Historic or National and/or State Battlefield Sites where nothing can be dug up, except for the purpose of legitmate governent or approved schorship research-museum purposes. In other words, the great-grandchild or whatever of a fallen Union or Conferderate solder can not recover the coins, gun, etc. their ancestor was buried with from their grave at Gettysburg. And in respect for the dead, nothing is displayed w/o an important reason.

    Cool coin and part of history. Dont know about the good luck part though. Think that was all used up the first time.

    a VERY COOL coin to view in person. Especially in the context of the museum and the actual sub. The preservation and history presented to the public is exceptional.

    These replicas some are talking about leads me to wonder: If you took a genuine 1860 double eagle, and bent it, and engraved it, would the Hobby Protection Act require that you label it "COPY"? After all, it isn't a copy of a coin, it's a real coin.

    I clicked on the "Gold Coin Found " link, and I found it odd that they have 2 sets of pictures, one the original coin found (1860 Double Eagle), and one of "a similar coin" (an 1860 Half Eagle). Whats up with that? If youre going to offer a comparative picture, how about showing an 1860 Double Eagle without the engraving and the bend? Thats like me having a toned 1886 Battle Creek and offering an 1886 Liberty head Nickel to compare it to. makes no sense to me at all. JMHO
