Is verdigris detrimental to coins?

ddbirdddbird Posts: 3,168 ✭✭✭
Tis a shame...just got the prettiest Large Cent I have ever seen, but there be two little specks of green above the c on the Reverse.

Is this PVC or Verdigris? And if Verdigirs, will it get worse or hurt the value of the coin?

Thanks much.

Pics are too dark to tell what denom the coin is let alone what the trouble area is.

    Sorry....

young### I wonder if you are exagerating.

I can see the coin just fine, I can see the denomination, but I really don't see any ver... or pv...

I see the spots you are referring to, and they don't bother me that much.

1820 is one of the Randall hoard dates, and this coin has the look of one of the coins from that hoard. They very often come with spots. In fact, finding a spot free one is quite an accomplishment.

If you are that concerned about it, have it sent to NCS for a review/conservation....Mike

Beautiful cent! Love the obv die crack, It looks like verdigris to me and, if so, conservation is in order.

Verdigris is a product of corrosion which is detrimental to the health of your coins. Once removed, pitting is usually exposed.
