VAM question: 1921 D 1F

I have googled it, searched for it on ebay in current and completed, checked the forum but cannot find any info (ie, rarity, other markers.)

Any help would be appreciated.

Must be new, not listed in Ashmore as of 2/2006. You'll have to email Leroy Van Allen

Now I am really confused. It's listed on his site and here's a pic of the exact same break

Now for the curiosity.....it also has the same marker for the 1X as well.

The pic of the 1BU break is not the same as the one on your coin. Look at where the topmost part of the carck rises above the A, and also where it touches the left side of the T. Very similar, but absolutely different.

  • I'm curious also. I couldn't resist all the die breaks.

Early die state of VAM 1F. Not sure why this is called 1F and not something more appropriate to the tripled stars on the obverse like "5D."

Well, not the terminal state, but not an early state. I agree that Leroy should probably reconsider the designation instead of just stringing it out off the VAM-1 simply because of the D2a reverse.

Would it help if I sent this one in to him? I don't know how many there actually are but if he had it in hand......

If you'd like. Send it with hardcopy pictures of the tripled obverse stars, and compare then to those on the VAM 5. It would probably help to send a later die state VAM 1F, but it one isn't available, at least refer to yours as an earlier or middle die state.

I will do that. I have another 8 morgans to send him and I will put that into it as well.

I'll drop a note on it with the box I have for Leroy. This affects all VAM-1F regardless of die state. They all have tripled left stars. He can examine his photos of the variety or ask for one sent to him if he will consider a new number for it. He probably doesn't need to have another in hand though.
