Harlan J. Berk, Ltd. 31 North Clark Street Chicago, IL 60602 Tel: 312.609.0016 Fax: 312.609.1305 Email: info@harlanjberk.com

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

His web site is very nicely done. The black background is a bit hard on the eyes, but it's still an excellent example of an old-line dealer adapting well to the new market.

The harsh black background is the only complaint with the site - otherwise it's one of the better designed examples out there on the web, and they've had it that way for some time now.

and in the "to each his own department..."

I love the black background and HJB is one of my favorite coin websites (despite the lack of bust half dimes)

Just for info only I live in the area of Harlin Berk store and used to work near the place on occations. Visited the place many, many times in the past. Just so you'll know what you see on thier web site will probably not be there when you get there. What they have in the windows is thier best of certain varieties. About a third of the ones I looked at a few weeks ago were all cleaned and most of them that were cleaned were marked cleaned. However, thier prices don't reflect that to much. They are not flexible in prices either. Although going there for many years when I ask what the actual price of a coin is I am told to look at the price marked, that's it. Not real friendly people there.

    Ask for Tom.
It is not exactly cheating, I prefer to consider it creative problem solving!!!

  • Quickly browsing the inventory of IHC and noted a lot of coins that looked not only cleaned, but harshly so. Heres some links, let me know if you agree based on the photos.

Yes the 08S and 09S probably were cleaned. I recently posted a visit to that place on this forum but don't know where or how to LINK to it. But as I said in that post I've been a customer of that place since before it was Harlan J. Berk. Can't remember the name of the place before that because a long, long time ago. When they first started out they were great. Now no flexibility on prices and rude. I asked the last time I was there how come so many coins are cleaned and was told that's the way we buy them. As many times as I've been in there they never greet a customer as though they wanted them in the store. The last time there this guy named Tom that I usually talk to just walked away leaving some lady to wait on me that appeared to not now anything about coins.

Oh well. I guess if you know what you're looking at, you can find some pretty nice coins there - see the '08-S cent pic attached. Purchased from them raw, from an old-time collection they had purchased.

The people there have always been perfectly friendly to me, Dennis, Tom and everyone. But then, I don't expect them to drop everything they're doing to wait on me hand and foot whenever I happen to saunter in.

They do have cleaned junk in the window, mixed right along with some occasional collector gems. It's the gems that I'd want, they're really not too difficult to spot... but you might want to ask Tom if you're unsure, he'd be happy to give a frank opinion of any given coin. Perhaps you caught them on a bad day.

The place used to be the Chicago location of RARCOA, if I recall correctly.

Russ, since it appears you understood what he said, can you translate for the rest of us?

I didn't understand it either. But, since he's repeated it 222,377,243,787,355,299,363 times, the broken record is the only suitable response.
