Over $10,000 in gold coins and bars stolen in New York

Too bad no dates for the coins are given.

ALMA - Police are investigating a gold heist in the town of Alma that took place some time in the last year.

Missing gold coins and bars valued at a going rate of more than $10,000 were reported as missing to Amity-based state police Sunday afternoon.

Troopers said a Stonedam Road resident said numerous gold coins were missing.

They were itemized as 12 one-ounce gold krugerrands, three one-ounce gold Canadian maple leafs, three one-ounce gold bars, three $5 Indian head gold pieces and two $10 Indian head gold pieces.

The approximate value of gold is $560 per ounce.

The victim said the gold was stored in a Sentry safe that was located in an upstairs bedroom of a house on Stonedam Road where a man lives near his son.

The father told troopers that the last time he opened the safe was almost a year ago. About a month ago he attempted to get into the safe, but couldn't remember or find the combination. After contacting Sentry for the combination, the safe was opened on Feb. 25, and the family found the gold contents missing.

A former girl friend of the son has been questioned but no suspects have been listed. Troopers said the investigation is continuing.

Those damn sneaky burglars who open the safe and take stuff and then relock it should all be hanged.

How easy are theses smaller Sentry safes to break into?, Could you just hit the dial with a sledgehammer to break in---------------------------BigE

Sounded like someone knew the combination.

AT least he didn't store the gold on a shelf in his garage, though Sentry safes aren't much better.

I think he was just trying to be funny and didn't mean anything by it. At least that's the way I took it.

Everyone of my so called friends laughed at me when I built an 8x8 vault to house my 2 ton safe but this story just reinforce's my decision.image
