Curtis Martin

How come Curtis Martin gets absolutely no respect in the card market ? The guy is fourth all - time in rushing with 13,366 yards and tenth all - time with 85 rushing TD'S and he's still going. His '95 Select Certified rookie card can be had for less then 10.00. I remember Terrell Davis '95 Select Certified rookie card of the same year selling for hundreds at it's peak. I think it's time for the sports card market to show Curtis a little love.

  • Records are always a plus but you got to win the big game and get popular with the fans. If no one is buying then everyone has one for sell.
  • Keep in mind that at Terrell Davis' peak, he had a 2000 yard rushing season and a Super Bowl. Martin doesn't have those. Martin looks more like a stat accumulator than anything else. Hang around long enough and you'll get the numbers. He's also overshadowed in NY by Tiki Barber, which doesn't help his cause.

Now that I think about it, has Curtis Martin ever had an endorsement deal???
Next MONTH? So he's saying that if he wins, the best-case scenario is that he'll be paying for it two weeks after the auction ends?

Forget blocking him; find out where he lives and go punch him in the nuts. --WalterSobchak 9/12/12

Onlyanumber is exactly right. TD was going for OJ's record, and the Broncos were on a big roll and Elway was becoming immortal. Nothing like that going on for the Jets. But I don't think he's an accumulator in the derogatory sense. He just consistently goes and has 1200-1400 yard seasons. In 2004 he had almost 1700, but then this year got hurt and still had 700. He's up to 14,101 yards, BTW. It's hard to fault a guy for being very good but not outstanding, but that's how some people are judged in terms of the hobby. In recent years we've seen incredible single-season performances from Davis, Emmitt Smith, Marshall Faulk, Corey Dillon, Priest Holmes, Ladainian Tomlinson, Stephen Alexander, etc., and Martin doesn't stand out in any of the glamour stats or play for a championship team. I think he's a prime candidate for some kind of reevaluation by the hobby, though, and could be one of those rare guys who all of a sudden people wake up and realize he's a HOFer and his cards start moving up.

  • a lot of players from all sports who put up great numbers dont get much attention in the card market. before steroids, rafael palmeiro was just a blip in the baseball card market. pitchers in general, despite the great numbers they may put up, are nearly completely ignored. in basketball, hockey and football, where the hobby market isnt as strong as baseball, it's even worse. martin is an example....but you can probably name a lot more. basketball...karl malone, stockton drexler...these guys didnt get much attention. add the fact that the card market today is oversaturated...so, you have to be really something special in order to garner attention in the modern card market. additionally, media hype has to be taken into account. look at the names i listed above...a lot of these guys are not media hogs...they do what they need to do on the field of play, end of story. but, jordan, lebron, ichiro...these guys, along with their great numbers, are also more media friendly. dennis rodman cards were big at one point when he played with the bulls.
