ANACS Certified "No VDB" Lincoln Wheats?

Can anyone give some insight, references, etc. on these?

    they occur when the dies get grease in them ....or the vdb is abraided away during polishing.

    edited to add:

    the vdb is incuse on the cent...that means the vdb is "raised" letters on the die.

    that makes the vdb much easier to be worn off during routine cleaning/polishing.

    by doing a little detective work...listening to others and reading books!

    does anyone out there disagree with my analysis?

    No disagreement here. I'm just surprised it doesn't happen more often. The initials on the die are raised, and in a fairly exposed location. It wouldn't take too much polishing of the die face to remove those tiny raised letters on the die.

    I haven't looked at the V.D.B. in a few years. I don't remember the initials being incused on the reverse.

    I'm under the impression that the die is incused.

    it is ....on the 1909 ONLY.

    they are on the obverse under the shoulder after that....and didn't appear on the coin at all during the years 1910 thru 1917 inclusive.
