Russ keeps pretty good records on this particular series, but I don't think I'm going out on a limb by saying this blew away prices for similar coins. The 68*u/c is a pop 1, but I thought it would get priced around what a ngc 69 u/c would bring; somewhere in the $600-800 range. Regular ngc 68 ultracameos run around $150-250.
At $2,000, I don't think it's registry mania driving this one either.

I had estimated this one in the $650 range, or about 3X normal market value. Damn, was I WAY off! This kind of money is not too far away from PCGS PR69DCAM territory. It'll be interesting to see if it sticks.

BTW, that's very much what the example in my set looks like.

  • Market-making is a very important function, one not to be underestimated. I admire those coin dealers who daily post their buy and sell prices for their regular coins; this guaranteed liquidity helps make me feel more financially secure with my collection. Thus it creates more interest in holding such coins in the first place.

I wonder if the spread between the Teletrade Sale Price and the R&I Coins $3,400.00 listing price is the usual spead/markup for coins offered for sale by R&I Coins.

As for me, I have more fun looking for coins similar in appearance to the coin sold on Teletrade in the raw in proof sets or singles at shows and shops (the problem is I just can not find enough of them that look as nice as the one sold on Teletrade; however, when I do find one that nice and pick it up on the cheap, I feel really, really, really great and get an energy boost to continue looking for the next hit, er, coin).
  • R&I usually works on a 100%-300% markup... this is actually an exceptionally low mark-up for them!

Well I guess I donlt feel too bad as the under bidder at $2000.

It was at about $1700 with 30 seconds left, so I maxed with $2K thinking I had it.

Wonder how high Rick's bid actually was???
