Nice 960 reis overstrike

This Brazil 960 reis is unusual in that the undercoin is fully identifiable -- its a Chile 8 reales 1807 So FJ, KM 51. It's one of the best I've seen in terms of being able to identify the undercoin. The coin itself isn't so great -- I give it a cleaned XF with a somewhat flat strike on the obverse.

You should be able to pretty clearly see the date of the undercoin on the obverse and the So mintmark on one of the arms of the cross on the reverse. The assayer's initials are there, but they're very faint.

Clear as day. Beautiful coin! I have never purchased one of these, but I have been tempted many times.

They're addictive. Once I got my first one, I was hooked. I just picked up a copy of "The 960 Reis Overstrikes," by Levy -- it's amazing how many varieties there are. The cover of the book has a picture of a 960 reis coin struck over a U.S. bust dollar.

These things are cool! I only have one, and when I found out (at a coin club meeting) that you could often identify the undertype, I had hours of fun examining hi-res scans looking for it. I finally found it: an 1820 Mexican dollar under an 1820 Brasilian dollar.

Pretty mundane, but still fun to find... and educational! image

Is there any great price differential between those you can identify and those you can't?

One of mine was struck over a Mexico City mint 1807 piece of eight.

The Levy book says if the undercoin can be determined, there's generally a 50 percent to 100 percent premium over the Krause value. In certain cases, it can be even more -- the coin on the book's cover that was struck over a U.S. bust dollar sold for $10,500 a few years ago.

If it's struck over a post-independence Chile or Argentina crown, that's a good one. image
