What do you think of these Pictures

Hi everyone I'm getting ready to sell my dad's coin collection. I have finished grading, imaging and putting the information into a excel spreadsheet. However I am not sure if it is better to sell the items in small lots or as a complete group to maximize the value and minimize the hassle. I plan on using Ebay, but I do not have any experience using their service. Anyhow there are 5449 items in the collection, most of it silver.

I would appreciate comments on whether you think the photographs are complimentary. On my older coins the photographs make the coins look brown. Is there a way to correct this in photoshop, and should I. I would prefer not to because there a lot of photographs. My camera is just Fuji Finepix Z1 digital camera and I used one incandescant light source.
Thanks for you comments.

The images seem to have an incandescent (yellow) cast. If your camera has a pre-set white balance function I would use that rather than "auto white balance". Also I believe you might get better shots if you took them level with the coins as opposed to the angles in the ones you posted. Still a third recommendation would be to steady the camera by using a tripod, a box with a hole cut for the lens, or something similar to avoid blurring the images. It looks like your shutter speed is fairly slow and you are hand holding the camera which results in slightly blurred photos.

  • Unfortunately my camera's only ability to adjust white balance is through the menu where you can select your lighting source: natural, fluorescent (3 types), and incandescent. Also I have already imaged my coins. However in the future if/when I start my own collection I will certainly correct my methods. I took these images at an angle because these coins had a lot of luster and I liked the way the light reflected off of the surfaces. Most of the coins that I presented above were captured fairly well in my opinion. I had more trouble on the coins that were more worn and did not retain their mint state luster. I will show you some of those coins below.

Steve I only wish my camera was capable of the functions you suggest. My camera is one of those compact digital cameras similar to the popular Canon models.

Here are some examples of the coins which were more brown than they should have been.

I think your pics are OK, and if you want to maximize your yield, I would break the group up into small inexpensive lots at first. That way you can establish some history before listing the better material.
