How much does rim damage devalue a coin?

northcoinnorthcoin Posts: 4,987 ✭✭✭✭✭
I am looking at a Type I twenty dollar gold piece from the SS Republic wreck that I would otherwise grade as high as MS63 based on its surfaces. However it arguably has slight rim damage as though it had been pinched by some kind of holder or retrieval device on opposite sides of the coin. Would NGC and PCGS holder such a coin? How low would ANACS (assuming they still do) net grade just for some slight rim damage?

In my opinion, rim damage is a serious negative. I won't buy such coins.

  • Can you inflate a tire with rim damage? I hope this answers your question for you. Damaged coins period are hard to trade or sell. Sorry, good luck with your coin.

Well it's not my coin at this point in time. I've been invited to make an offer so any help or suggestions as to value welcomed. I have to emphasize that the rim damage is slight and one would not even notice it without searching for it.

Rim damage is kinda like fingerprints; some can tolerate it/them and some can't. I would guess it depends on how much such a blemish would discount the coin and whether you would be happy with it under those circumstances. If it was fairly easy to find a comparable coin problem-free I would pass.

Can you get us some pics? How slight is the damage? If its very slight the top TPGS's will slab it. Also, how much are they asking for it? If its cheap enough, even major rim damage wouldn't stop me or most dealers from buying it. Even damaged gold is worth at least melt.

  • Depends on how extensive the rim ding is. If the ding is minor, you might be "net graded" a point or two, if major, a bodybag.

I would say it depends on the severity of the damage and the rarity of the coin. However, now that you are aware of the damage, it would probably be the main focus of the coin every time you looked at it if you purchased it.

If its slight like you said, you could probably get it slabbed and the rim problem may not even be visible in the slab.
