I guess I won't have to figure out where I am going to get the $10,000 to buy it with.
I was going to respond to Legends thread about Moderns with a comment that I would be willing to pay up to $10,000 for this coin but decided not to waste my time.
I have been searching SBA's since 1995. I don't know how many hundreds of thousands of coins I have looked at but I have never made a MS68 SBA from the 1979-1981 era. I did make 2 of the 1999 P MS68's (POP 6).
I have said before that I do not believe any more MS68 SBA's from 1979-1981 will ever be graded by PCGS. These coins were tough to find raw 10 years ago in MS67. All 6 of the MS68's were graded before 1999.
If this coin had been real it would have been the first MS68 in 7 years!!!
One comment made about the SBA's is that they are still available in bags. The truth is there are many 100 coin bags around but the average grade in these bags is MS62 and high grade is MS64. There are very few 2,000 coin bags left and these have usually been poorly stored so that the high grade is MS65 (may be with one or two MS66's). The mint sets were never very nice, with exceedingly few coins making the MS67 grade. The 1980 S SBA's in mint sets average MS62 and I have never found one better than MS65 (All of the MS67's came from 2,000 coin bags).
P.S. The reason there are no "Market Makers" in moderns is that most modern collectors are too savvy to pay a premium for the coins they want or to sell at a discount the ones they don't. They know they can buy and sell without a middle man an eBay, Teletrade, and Heritage.

I thought they were the middle men?
I have been searching for 4 years for a 99-P SBA in ms68, but they do not seem to exist and PCGS is never going to give me one.
Would you really pay 10 grand for a coin you can go to the bank and get for a dollar??? I know it won't be a 68, but I'm sure you could get on in 65 in a bag.
Is that 3 points worth $9,999?

Dimeman, its not about the money and its not about the points, its about the passion that steams the drive to obtain the very best. I'm sure if the coin was real and available to DRG and the owner put in on eBay for instance and was asking 15K, I'm sure that DRG would find the resources to obtain this coin. He says that it would be the first one made in 7 years...that says alot.

Sure I would!!!
I am not kidding when I say that I have searched hundreds of thousands of SBA's. I make a good living as an M.D. My time is valuable. I have already spent more than $10,000 worth of time searching for this coin....with no luck!
Collecting, at least for me, is about finding the very best. I don't mind paying some one else for the time and effort I know they must have put in to find a coin like this. Maybe they were just lucky and found it the first time they looked, but I doubt it. That would be like assuming you could rival Exxon by digging in your back yard.
By the way, a 1979 P Wide Rim in MS67 sells for $2-3K, a MS68 (POP 1) would be worth at least $10K. Also it is not that easy to find 1979 P Wide Rim SBA's. If you can find one at the bank it will be circulated (and still worth more than $1). A MS65 Wide Rim sells for about $100.
If you are a DR. and have that kind of money to spend on coins why do collect SBA's? I'm sorry but the only coin uglier is the IKE! You could go into some really nice coins. Like Walkers or Mercurys or V-nickels or if you like dollars Seated or Trade or Indian cents and so on.
I just don't understand collecting any of the stuff we have now. I can see young kids collecting moderns in lower grades because of their money.
Oh well, I sure wish I had you money and you had mine.
No one was collecting them and they were dirt cheap. I paid very little for my set early on. Then it just became a crusade.
Some one has to do it.
I ask why people would climb to the top of a mountain and risk their lives, I wouldn't, but lots of intelligent people do.
I agree the SBA is not a pretty coin. It is however an important part of our history. If and when the US gets tired of throwing money away by printing $1 bills and we move to a $1 coin, the SBA will have her day. That is not why I collect them.
I do it because I can.
No one collects Morgans anymore, they're too popular (revised Yogi Berra quote!).
They almost made the new dollar (1979) with Liberty on it, then went with the SBA
Beautiful !!!!!
I think he has one heck of an Ike collection as well!?
I wonder what the offspring would look like if you could breed an SBA with an Ike?
Imagine an MS67 Peg-Leg with Full Talons on the end!
Brian
I LOVE UGLY, BALD IKES!
I take my hat off to you, not only as a DR. (I'm a nurse), but for some of your comments in this post. You collect SBA's because you can and because you LOVE THESE COINS! I know so many people that don't have a hobby. You have searched countless coins for those special ones just for your collection. The thrill of the hunt! Have a beer on me DR.

I would like to apologise(sp) to you and the rest of the board for my comments in this thread. I guess when I see someone paying thousands for a modern all I can think about is what I could buy with that same money. And like Paul said evryone should be able to buy and collect what THEY like and want. And he is right and I was wrong to post what I did. Everyone should be proud of the sets and not be put down by someone else just because they don't collect the same things you do.
Again, I am sorry and I'm sure it took you a lot of time, money and effort to put your sets together and you SHOULD be proud of them just as I am proud of mine.
Hope you find that 68 SBA someday. Good luck and happy hunting.
Jon
I have asked the same questions of myself more than once. The best answer I have come up with is what I said before. It is there, and I can, so why not? The fact that no one has ever done it before, and that no one can do it better (at least right now) are added bonuses.
The fact that possibly no one else is crazy enough to want to do it, has not been lost on me. As it turns out there are several people that seem to care about these coins also, but I was not betting on that when I started this crusade, nor am I betting on that for the future. I do not intend to sell this collection, so other peoples interest is more trouble than benefit to me. It just drives up the prices I have to pay (if and when any new Top POP’s are made.
Take care Dimeman and happy collecting!
Thanks for the kind words. I wasn't questoining weather you were a doctor or not. Speaking my mind has gotten me into trouble before and probably will again.
Anyway I'm glad that your OK with everything and I wish you well on your quest to have the best.
Jon
Believe me when I say that I've let loose on a few people around here and feel bad for it. I too did not see anything wrong with your comment. You were speaking your mind, and thats great. I have to say that I've scratched my head more then a few times regarding why a person would collect what he/she collects. Some people are just insane about their collections. For instance I have no idea why anyone would collect STAMPS. I think it would be more of a hassle then fun, but if they like it, then more power to them!

"Collecting, at least for me, is about finding the very best"
I tip my hat to you and all those collectors that strive to do the same.
DIMEMAN,
I admire your candor, many times a rarity on these threads.
For me, I suppose I've paid more for a really modern (post 1997) coin than anyone else on the planet.
Some would probably say this about it and some say that, but... in the last two years, no one has been able to find me another PCGS MS70 $100 Plat in the earlier years? (pre 2002) to fill my collection.

You could collect penny blacks by plate and position!
Today I posted a thread in the US Coin Forum about a OBW roll of 1979D SBA dollars that my mother got at a bank in Denver in 1979 and gave to me. I have had the roll ever since and opened it yesterday due to curiousity. I like all 25 coins in the roll. The details are in my thread. If you have the time and interest, please read it and respond to it with your thoughts and opinions on the 1979D MS SBA coins. I do not know how to grade these coins, but I like the look of them. I think they are at least MS 65 and maybe MS 66. What does it take to get a 65, 66 and 67 grade for a 1979D?
It is not easy to get to PCGS MS67 for any regular issue coin. The coin needs to be essentially flawless to the naked eye, any contact marks need to be minor and blend in with the coin details (a single hit on the cheek will preclude MS67 and sometimes MS66).
The typical problem with the best SBA's will be a minor scuff on the high point of the cheek and/or multiple marks in the hair. Also some otherwise really nice looking coins will have multiple hairline abrasions; these can take a coin down to MS64, even though it has no major marks. While I have noticed that certain SBA's are only found in high grade from certain sources (the 1980 S from $2,000 bags), they all seem to have the same basic problem areas as far as grading goes.
MS67 1979 D SBA’s come from several different sources. I made several from $2,000 coin bags and some from original bank rolls. The mint sets are not great for 1979 SBA's. An interesting fact is that the 1979 S coin was not included in the mint sets and yet has the highest POP in MS67 of the early SBA's. It has always struck me as odd that the following 2 S mint SBA's are the toughest in the series in high grade. What happened in one year for them to go from the easiest to the hardest?
I know the answer to this question for the 1981 S coin. The coin was only released in mint sets and these sets were not put together at the San Francisco mint (the S SBA is in the Mylar with the Denver coins). The S SBA's must have been trucked to wherever the packaging took place. It must be a very bumpy road from San Francisco to Denver. Both the 1980 S and the 1981 S SBA's found in Mint Sets are terrible looking coins. MS65 is the best 1980 S SBA that I have seen from a mint set. MS66 is REALLY tough for the 1981 S SBA.
OK, enough about SBA's.
less they a thrown around. It takes two hands to move them.
Looking through the 25 coins was a treat. I was surprised at how nice the coins look and was surprised at how clean the reverses are on the coins. Maybe I am just not seeing any contact marks/chatter that is present on te reverses of the coins since it is a busy design that could hide such items. As for the obverses, most of the coins have contact marks/chatter, but they are not the type that draws attention to them when you first look at the coins. In fact, without a loupe I can not even see the marks/chatter. When looking at the obverses with a loupe, a few of the coins show marks on the bust of SBA where another coin's reeded edge made the mark. Other than those few coins, the marks/chatter are so minor that it almost seems that some of them are planchet flaws that were not eliminated through metal flow when the coins were struck.
If you have a picture of the front and back of a 65, 66 and 67 1979D SBA's that you could post, please do. I would like to compare siad pictures with the 25 coins I have. Thanks. SanctionII.
