I've been considering this coin for a while, but...

I've seen it before. I think that while it's a nice coin, the price is far too high for me to ever touch it.
  • IT'S a monster ....
  • NICE toning. I love the obverse!

Don't like it. Odd toning pattern.

I don't like it either, too mottled for my tastes.

It doesn't do a whole lot for me, and I generally like toning.
  • BaronVonBaughBaronVonBaugh Posts: 1,837 ✭✭✭✭
    I don't care for it.

The real question is do you like it as well as the seller does?

Well its nice but the price seems high to me, but then again I'm well known for thinking that toining is overpriced in general.

It has beautiful wayte raymond album target tone, Dick is a very personable seller to do business with and always has the nicest toned coins to speak of, If you like the coin , buy it, I think this monster toner represents incredible future potential as a long term investment, and in hand, would look much better image
  • I like it except for the specks on the sails.

Actually, it looks like it might be tab toning from the original holder, but I am not familiar with the holders these originally came in.

Looks like tab toning to me.

I dunno. I wouldn't do it. You never know how much of a coin's stated grade came from exceptional eye appeal vs. technical merits like luster, marks, & strike -- and this is one where the jump from a 65 to a 66 is considerable (3x, something like that) on top of which you've got the 2-3x premium for the color? Seems steep.

I'm sure it is beautiful. It just seems like a lot of money for what it is.

Pass. Any seller that juices his images and requires a 10% restocking fee for returns is not someone I would pay 3x retail for the coin, no matter how terrific the coin looks like on ebay.
  • I really don't like the toning on it. Probably better in hand though....

In my opinion, there are much better coins you could buy for three thousand dollars.

Asking price on this coin is almost two and a half times current PCGS full retail.image The tab toning is a nice feature, but the luster does not appear to be strong on the untoned parts of the reverse. This type of obverse toning is common on this issue, and I find it unappealing.image JMHO

This can't be true, I say this because all the folks that consign to him flame me when I say what you've mentioned in the above quote. And say the coins look EXACTLY like the images. So I have now learned on here this must be true. Besides, I've also learned he's a "Good Guy" which means everything, and don't forget the 100% positive feedback. Should I put a wink, or no? haha

Since I have not seen the coin in person, I cannot confirm that the image is juiced. It certainly looks like it, but I might be wrong. What I feel certain about is the importance of avoiding 10% restocking fees on ebay transactions or any other purchases. If this were a real auction with realistic photos (ie. Russ), you could make the argument that return priviliges are not appropriate. In this case, ebay is being used as a fixed price sales outlet, the prices are very high compared with published values, and 100% return privilige is appropriate. No seller with this policy will ever get a sale from me (at any price and with any pictures)--and I do not care how many old ladies the "good guy" helps cross the street! image

Nice, original album toning. Commems aren't my thing, but it looks nice.

RYK, gaw-head and feel comfortable bidding and don't worry about the 10% restocking fee. I've seen the seller come on here and wave it. That's what I'm saying he's a good guy. And you forgot the 100% feedback. Or is that how he keeps it that way by waving the restocking fee. image

Dizzy, I like it but I like mine better. image

Edited to add a quote from your own signature line:

"If you're considering whether or not to buy that special coin, life's too short- image"
  • Bottom line....beautiful coin so it's up to you what your willing to pay.........I have purchased too many coins from Dick to listen to claims that the pictures are juiced......every coin I have won have been as close as you can get or in some cases the coins were much better in hand so yes Dick is an honest seller and truly one of the good guys.

Finally as to the restocking fee.....my most recent purchase from Dick was returned due to a spot of grease or something on the coin...(PCI slab go figure) and Dick graciously accepted the coin back and no restocking fee was charged to me so.......

Buy it if you like it.....it's your money Dizz image
  • Obverse looks nice. I don't care for the reverse.

    Nope...not my type of toning.
  • IrishMikeIrishMike Posts: 7,737 ✭✭✭
Whether on not the coin is or isn't enhanced I made the decision not to buy from him. he may be the best dealer, a nice guy etc. but I don't do business with some one who pulls his auctions after bids have been made and/or members here shill their own coins in his auction. The latter happened a few years back but I have a long memory. I just happen to draw the line there and while this may not bother other buyers it does me.

Ebay cannot detect this either. Still, I think it is unethical. If any major eBay consignors of coins think this is OK, I would like to hear why they think it is.

Let me add that when I questioned the shilling the buyer was responsible not the seller. The buyer explained to me that he had gotten seller's remorse. However he did not bid again on the three coins he had bid on. Hope this clarifies what I said earlier.
  • Not for me.....

If money is not an object for you and you could care less how much it is then look at the coin, if you like it buy it, if you don't then pass. If money is an object then Pass becasue when the right coin comes along you will know it.
