Ben Roethlisberger signed card

OK - I'm venturing over from the coin forum.

Ben Roethlisberger:

My son won a signed card at a Royal Rangers (church boys group) camp out for a first prize. It;s a Topps Card Number 175, signed on the front with a sharpie pen with the autograph and the jersey number.

It's in a protective plastic sleeve.

He does not want to sell it. But, what is the value of the card? Is this a safety deposit box item, or just a keepsake? Is it worthwhie to get it "slabbed".

Just wanted to know from the guys in the know.

If it's a certified insert (came from a pack signed) then you probably don't need to get it "slabbed". I sold one right after the super bowl and got about $150 for it, that one came from a pack.

If it's a regular card that somebody had him sign, compare the sig to a few on ebay and if it looks good you can get it slabbed for I think $20. At least the slabbing shows that it's authentic, and with what you paid so far you'll be ok.

The way they're spitting out auto cards I don't think it'll ever put him thru college. If you don't have a lot of people in and out of your house who would have access to it you can probably leave it at home, keep it out of the sunlight, the water, and the heat.

Sounds like a nice card to get free.

Thanks for the feedback. I think this would have been from the production pack.

He knows it's a "collector" card, and he's starting to understand how to handle rare coins. This should be good training for him.
