I bet His Madness will be there (among other Darkside miscreants) !

I'll be there on Saturday. Be on the lookout for a 400-lb guy lugging around 75 pounds of Krause catalogs in a dark blue denim gym bag... that would be me.
I plan on driving up early Saturday morning, rummaging around at the show til about dinner time. Then maybe hang out with you all for dinner and then driving back home.
I plan to be there on Friday and Saturday unless things change. I will be with a good friend from my coin club in Terre Haute, IN - he has been going for years, while I have not been there in about 6-7 years. I will be looking for some newps. I'll probably bump into "His Madness" like the rest of you.
Maybe some of us Darksiders might want to have a get-together at the show - what does everyone think?

Well, as I stated in my previous post, I haven't been to CICF in about 5-6 years - figured I'd see how foreign was doing, and maybe snatch some bargins for resale (unless His Madness gets them first).

I've been told that there are some billionaires buying up all the decent foreign coins: thus there'll be nothing available for 'normal' collectors. I was thinking of going to Chicago but was afraid of what I'd find there -- or what I wouldn't find.
I have a small "group" of some Latin Amer. Republcn. + some French which has many holes I was hoping to fill 2 or 3 of per year. However recently I've been having no luck. Some of my collection is viewable here coinsandhistory.com
Do you think there will be any collectable foreign at Chicago?
I should mention that I'm looking for earlier Latin Amer. Republcn. which seems a bit popular these days.
I collect Ancients and early Independence Era Latin American.
Well, I think I will be up there both Friday and Saturday. I will not pay for the $50 day, but will be there for the weekend I believe. Last week of freedom before another casino sinks their claws into me.
We still have 2 weeks to go Dimitri, TTT all you want! You should try to head south while you here!! I can put you up in a tent!! You coins can stay at the house though.
Why is it so very difficult to get a meaningful answer from anybody on this BBS? One of these days you will have to talk about coins for real? But maybe not.... All comments about parks & dinner aside I was curious about the chance of finding a decent foreign coin or 2 at Chicago at a semi-palatable price. I don't know why someone told me about Morgan dollars: I don't like Morgan dollars, don't collect them, think they're common unattractive junk, and certainly don't want to travel a thousand miles to a foreign coin show for them.
Good coins for me would be something like a Libre Peru peso in ms (e.g. Peru, Republic, 8 reales 1822 or 23, 'decent' unc slabbed or raw) or maybe a Chilean Condor 8 Reales or 8 Escudoes, prior to 1850 in nice unc. Basically any Latin American stuff prior to about 1866 in nice ms. These coins were quite available but are getting hard to find these days.
I used to also collect Polish but that's out of the question these days.........

Hello!!!!
I said you would have a hard time finding a Morgan dollar, the show is all foreign. There will be no US coin dealers there. I would have to think that you would be able to find something that you collect. I do not collect US coins currently and that is why I am going.3Mark
Gallinius, past years have seen about a 50/50 mix between Ancients and all else from the 17th c. to date.
CICF is about 99.5% Foreign ONLY.
There are more than a few dealers with heavy emphasis on Central & S. America.....here are dealers with tables.
The most valuable part of attending is making contact with dealers in your speciality area who can specifically be looking for your interests. Even if they might not have what you want currently, they can probably find choice specimens to suit your needs. Good luck if you attend.

Excuse me Mac, most valuable part for me is making contact with some members of this forum finally. I don't care if I leave the show without buying a single coin, although it's highly unlikely.
Marty, you're not welcome without the rubber chicken.
that's my birthday weekend - who's buying me presents?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!
wish I could go but we got 3 drop-dead dates happening at customer sites in the next 6 weeks and I'll be doing good to come up for air during that period...

The preview crowd on Thursday was a bit underwhelming. I went out of the bourse room about 15 min before the preview began, and there was only one person registering at the table with no one else to be seen in the hallway. I think most had been herded into the cafeteria, but I was still filled with a bit of dread for what lay ahead as there is usually a mob forming outside the hall half an hour before entry time. There were a few tables that went empty for some reason. Maybe the show wasn't a sell out. The day proved to be so-so for sales. Most dealers I have talked to have reported rather unimpressive sales so far, but most are looking forward to Saturday.
Most of the usual suspects are still popular. Russian, Polish and British are in demand overall. I'm getting a lot of requests for Mexican coinage. German is another popular request as it always is.
Forum member count so far is: Macrimmon, Syracusian, conder101 and dorancoins. I don't think I've missed anyone, but my brain is so fried right now, that I can't be sure.
Because of the strike I was told to put off any time off I had planned. Once I saw that the strike would not be ending in time for the Chicago show I canceled my plane tickets. Salary people have been working many hours and weekends over the last few months so Friday the president of the company tells us to take this weekend off and enjoy it with our families and friends.

I went on Saturday for a bit. Didn't buy anything but said hi to a few people (Karl Stephens, etc.). As usual there was nothing of interest in Polish coins from the period I collect. I assume any coins that were there had already been picked up on Thursday by other Polish collectors.
The floor was kind of dead on Saturday. This is the first I've actually gone to CICF but compared to NYINC or other shows I've attended it was slow.
The show reminded me of why I rarely go to shows... other than the social aspect of seeing people, it's rare that I ever find something. And some of the dealers just plain don't have people skills. One older Russian guy had a few older Polish coins in his case, and I asked him if he had anything from the early 20th century. His response was "The cheap stuff?"
Right.... cheap stuff. Friendly guy, and really aware of the market.

The show was certainly busy enough on Thursday and Friday. Saturday was a little slow and Sunday was pretty miserable.
My single favorite purchase was this early Venezuelan piece from the Ponterio sale. It's a very choice unc and far better than anything I've seen of its kind.

Very Nice (Venezuelan 2R). My recollection is that Ponterio stuff has to be seen in person: the grades he gives may vary in his catalogs. For some reason I hardly ever see clipped Latin American coins. Counterfeits yes, clipped no: I guess the clipping is more frequently found on English hammered gold & silver?
Did you look at lot 516: the 1824 Mo Hookneck in slabbed 62? What did you think of it? This is a type I need for my collection but I didn't want to go thru what I imagined would be a bloodbath in this market to get it.
I collect Ancients and early Independence Era Latin American.
