Is this what a CLEANED coin looks like?

I'm beginning to learn what to look for in coins that should make me NOT want the coin. Take a look at this capped bust 50c and tell if this is a sign of cleaning.

It is a little too "white" in the center, but does not look too bad to me.

When looking for cleaned coins, look for unnaturally shiny or numerous hairlines going in the same direction.

It's a safe bet that it was cleaned at one time. How severely is impossible to determine from the images. There are a lot worse examples than this one, though. Also, it should be noted that the vast majority of these have been cleaned to some degree and many are holdered by the major TPG's.

That is a very pretty coin. I can't see any hairlines in the pic. Should be in a slab.

Most coins of that age were cleaned at one point or another, so it probably was. That being said, I would not consider it a great example of a cleaned coin. Looks like some natural toning. Very nice.

Another coin that really shows why the TPG are in business. Over graded, over priced, and as said cleaned with marginal acceptable pictures.
Coins like this are why I ended up buying PCGS only if it is over $100.00 especially on eBay.

It looks to me to have been burnished to remove the toning on the high points of the coin. It may have been done long ago.
