Should Ron Guidry be in the Hall of Fame?

Guidry, arguably had one of the most dominant years by a pitcher ever when it 1978 he went 25-3 with a 1.74 ERA. He single handedly kept the Yankees in the hunt when at one point they were 14 games out of first. His lifetime record is 170- 91 (.651) with an ERA of 3.24.

162 Game Avg: 16- 8

Black Ink: Pitching - 29 (50) (Average HOFer ~ 40)
Gray Ink: Pitching - 140 (109) (Average HOFer ~ 185)
HOF Standards: Pitching - 38.0 (77) (Average HOFer ~ 50)
HOF Monitor: Pitching - 106.5 (82) (Likely HOFer > 100)

Why the heck isn't this guy in?

  • And anyone who says that Guidry only had one good year:

    1977: 16-7
    1978: 25-3
    1979: 18-8
    1980: 17-10
    1982: 14-8
    1983: 21-9
    1985: 22-6

The HOF is for great players. Not good ones. When I think of Ron Guidry, I think of pitchers like Bret Saberhagen and Jack Morris as well. They had their moments, but they're not among the greats.

True, there's a lot players who have made it in that shouldn't have (Don Sutton comes to mind), but two wrongs don't make a right.

    Jim Bunning too.

Guidry was hands down my favorite pitcher of all time yet I cant give my thumbs up on the hall. Not taking anything away from him, but it would have taken a couple less injuries and around 3 or 4 more top flight years for him to be considered IMO.

If you look at Dizzy Deans stats I think he ended with 151 victories.Koufax was 165 -87 however his era 2.76 a half run better than Ron's.I think a case could be made for Ron nevertheless.IMO
Koufax was without a doubt for his short tenure the Greatest Lefty in my opinion.Ron was definetly no slouch but very effective in his own right.

  • I like Guidry--always thought he was a very good pitcher. But his stats don't add up to the hall. Only a 4 time All star. 1 CY Young Award. 1 2nd place and 1 3rd place in cy young voting. Never led the league in strikeouts (over 200 only twice) Two really great years there (78 and 85) but overshadowed in his other good seasons.

Koufax only had 6 good seasons, but they were six consecutive seasons where he was a pitching god. He couldn't be touched during those six seasons, walking away with three Cy Youngs, 3 pitching triple crowns and an MVP.

Guidry was good...just not good enough.
Next MONTH? So he's saying that if he wins, the best-case scenario is that he'll be paying for it two weeks after the auction ends?

Forget blocking him; find out where he lives and go punch him in the nuts. --WalterSobchak 9/12/12

I think it should also be mentioned that back then, they gave out only one Cy Young award for both leagues, making Koufax's run even more incredible.

Guidry had a good career, a great year, but no no no no to the hall of fame.

Just because you have a great year in yankee pinstripes doesn't make you hall bound, spammy!

Don't believe he played long enough or had enough dominant seasons....yes he was good, but then you can also say that Doc Gooden also was good....and I don't think anyone thinks he is going to the hall.

194 112 lifetime record for Doc. 24-4 in 1985 similar sparkling campaign. but does anyone think he will be in??? admit that he had other issues that Guidry never had, but stats are similar.
