Is this 1901 Morgan Unc. or au58?

I find this one of the most difficult coins to grade, and what really throws me off is all of the Unc. graded coins with poor detail on the high spots. Check out the poor detail of the eagle and tell me if you would grade this unc or au.

By the way, the blow up photo of the reverse slab is particularly revealing for the lack of reverse detail.

From the image, I'm surprised it didn't grade higher than MS 61.

  • Risky coin to buy in NGC low grade BU - - PCGS grades this date especially tough in this range, and there are probably better coins in PCGS AU58 holders (and MUCH cheaper!!)

I'm very surprised that on a condition rarity like this one, the coin didn't get 58'ed.

That's actually a nice looking piece for a 1901-P with above average lustre and a typical reverse strike, although it also looks dipped :-)

Most 1901-Ps look pretty bad with horrible steel grey lustre, a weak strike, and poor overall eye appeal. You cannot grade this date like it's an 1880-S.
