Some advice on strange old English coins

Hi.. image

I googled coin collectors forum, and found this forum, so thought it would be a good place to get some advice.
I know nothing about coins so am hoping you guys could shed some light on something for me.

Recently i was clearing out a room and in a cupboard and i found an old box, This box contained a lot of old letters, millittay passes and 5 coins.
These coins are British half pennies from 1943 and 1944. In it's self i dont think they are anything special. But when i looked at them i noticed they are only stamped on one side. One side is stamped with the date, a picture of a ship and the words "half penny", The other side is completely blank and smooth

So i have two questions. Why are they only stamped on one side, and are they worth anything?

A picture sure would help. It is not uncommon for magicians coins and others to have one side milled or filed smooth. If the blank side has the looks of a raw planchet and the rim condition matches the coin type and date, you may have something. So I guess a little more info would help.image

edit, check the weight, it should be 5.7 grm and Bronze

Maybe someone was thinking of making a Love Token and planed off the obverse? Or maybe someone just didn't like George VI?

  • I will take a few pictures if i can my laptop working.

It doesn't look as though it has been ground down, The blank side is completely flat and smooth with no markings at all.
Im sure i have some double sided half pennies somewhere, I will compare the thickness.
  • These are often found with one side smooth and used in a pub game ' Shoove Halfpenny '. I have a number that I played with my Grandfather fifty years ago.

Strange old English_______works for any British object! Or for that matter person, place or thing...I purchased a lightly toned VF 1930 trade dollar for twenty bucks yesterday-what a great coin. My first British trade dollar and I am sure not my last... Take care, Mark

If they are completely flat and smooth then they are definitely altered after they lef the mint. To create a true one sided coin is very rare an when they are are made the "unstruck" side will not be completely flat and smooth.
