Toned Coins

I am a new 16 year old collector and would like some information on toned coins. I have a few questions.
Does toning only occur on silver coins because of the oxidation process?
If I took my Morgans (or any other silver coin for that matter) out of their 2x2's and left them some place in the open air for a couple of years would they tone to those nice rainbow colors I see all over these boards?
How long does the toning process take to occur?
And finally, how can I tell a naturally toned coin from an artificially toned coin.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Welcome to the board. You might try to do a search on Rainbow Morgans. There are several informative threads on the topic. I will try to find a couple. Others may have them handy.

they also have not been left out in the open -> in rolls, or bags of 1000 coins, or folders, or felt cabinets
good luck, and since you are young, maybe in your lifetime -> most people just buy them
Toning on a coin is nothing moe than a patina that developes on the surface. The same thing happens to antique furniture. They get a certain look to it.
The hobby should be about the coin in it's natural state. Not dipped or played with.
Right now toned coins are the hottest thing going. Better than half the comments on this board are about toning. Just remember that anything that hot will get manipulated. Natural toning has a certain look to it and it will take some experience to be able to recognize it. Even then, be very careful because there are some very talented people out there.
Thats my take on it anyway
As to your Morgans, put them all in a plastic bag, fill with a dozen raw eggs, add a cup of Vinegar, then a few pinches of Basil. After a Month remove the coins and they will be all messed up but have a great salad odor.
All just kidding. Leave them alone. Do not put outside either. Your nieghbors will steal them.
