    Gretzky. Not even close.
"My father would womanize, he would drink. He would make outrageous claims like he invented the question mark. Sometimes he would accuse chestnuts of being lazy. The sort of general malaise that only the genius possess and the insane lament. Our childhood was typical. Summers in Rangoon, luge lessons. In the spring we'd make meat helmets. When we were insolent we were placed in a burlap bag and beaten with reeds - pretty standard really."

ORR, you shoulda started a poll image

Gretzy was protected by the league, he was good no doubt, but he really was to small (skinny that is).

If it was open season on him he wouldn't have lasted long.

    Sorry Wayne

I agree. He wouldn't of lasted a season back in Orr's day. You had to have talent and testicles to play then! image

  • There would have been no doubt that the Greatest One would have been Orr, had knee reconstruction of today been available in the 70's. But it was not, and the greatest to ever play was 1) Gretzky 2) Orr and 3) Gordie Howe. Ps Orr would have been a super star in Howe's era. Gretzky would not have survived!

It's tough to say who was the games best ever when injuries come into play.. the era.. different positions.. whatever.

I think Lemieux would have smashed quite a few of Gretzky's records (or they would have been Lemieux's records to break to begin with).... if he was healthy.

My vote goes to Terry Sawchuk image

They were both fantastic players who changed the game, although I find myself siding with the Gretzky guys. But it is close, and I could be totally wrong.

Greatest career Gretzky - Greatest player for one season at their best Orr
  • Brian48Brian48 Posts: 2,624 ✭✭✭
One season? More like one decade. If I had to minimalize a player's career to just one season, I'd give it to Mario. He should have shattered Gretzky's record for most points in a season that year before getting hurt towards to end.

ok ok I won't stray away from the topic talking about other players image

I pick Gretzky. No brainer really after reading the bellow.

He set 40 regular season records (including 9 MVP awards and 10 scoring titles), 15 playoff records, 6 All-Star records and won four Stanley Cups. He was the only player to total over 200 points in a season, accomplishing the feat 4 times; in addition he tallied over 100 points in 15 seasons, 14 of them consecutively.

Even Gretzky wrote in his book that for pure talent, Mario could have scored 100 points a year using half of a hockey stick. The criticism on Mario was that he took too much punishment despite his 6'4" frame. In other words he theoretically could take care of himself on the ice (unlike Gretzky who had Marty McSorley watching his back). I'm too young to have seen Orr play but you figure anyone (let alone a defenseman) who could score 100 points a year in 1970s-era hockey HAD TO take care of himself. (And look what happened to his knees as a result.)

This is an argument that is always fun to argue. There are so many factors to consider but I think the difference in the era in which Howe, Orr, and Gretzky played in is the most significant thing. Then again, like all sports, players and coaches just adjust to the current style of play. I guess it's all relative.
  • My vote is for Gretzky.
  • I saw them both play. Orr. If Orr was in his prime during the 80's, he would have scored 300 points + a season.

The only guy that ever hit Gretzky was thrown out of the NHL. He didn't even get to play the rest of the game. Dave Seminko never had to stick up for Gretz once, because the unwriten rule was, DON'T HIT GRETZKY- AND IF YOU HIT EM, GOOD BYE. If that wasn't the case and it was open season, someone like Scott Stevens would blown him apart like one of them little bombs made out of popsicle sticks.

The real guts of the Oilers, the ones that stayed after Gretzky was gone, had no trouble winning another cup, until the Moose was let go.

Like I said, He was good no doubt, among the very best. But it seems a little unfair to me that he will be the greatest of all time and all the other talent stacked on the 80s Oilers are just regular guys (NOT).

Greztky was definatly protected by the league, so in my books he looses points for that.

I'm only giving him a seventh overall, sorry again Wayne. And thats not counting all the guys that could have wrecked him.

Funny thing I find is that someone like the Pocket Rocket (Henri Richard) can win a dozen rings and then go unnoticed a generation later. To me, the rings are more important than the goals.
