WHICH PICS ARE BETTER???

saintgurusaintguru Posts: 7,724 ✭✭✭
I used to take my pics but now Mike Printz does.

Here's an example of both...you judge....TOP PIC vs. BOTTOM PIC in both sets....

You do take good photos, but Mr. Printz has you beat.

I think his photos have better color and contrast, but they are a bit oversharpened for my taste.

While the bottom pictures may be prettier, I think the top sets of pics most likely are a more accurate portrail of the coin, in both instances.

You do better than average, but not nearly as good as Mike.

  • The bottom ones are enhanced. The top ones would be superior to the bottom ones if there was more optic clarity.

edited to add: the top ones are actually pretty nice, but if they showed what I suspect is nice luster (and not from the photos on the bottom), they would be great.

My humble opinion for what look like a couple of great coins.

I wish I could do either, but I prefer the bottom.

  • I will jump on the bandwagon and say the bottom pick. Better colors.

I tend to agree with you all. I took the top pics and Mike took the bottom. I can't capture the lustre without getting all kinds of flash. He's clearly a great photographer.

I'm a rookie...but his are in my registry for all the obvious reasons.

    Thanks for the comments.

The coins acyually look mush more like Mike's photos. His technique captures color as it really appears. I know that he doesn't photoshop them at all, so the strange sharpness could be the way they translate when posted. They do look more clear in their jpg format, not on this site.

  • I'm going to go against the tide and say I like the top pics better. The bottom pics might be a better representation of the coin, but to me the top pics look more natural. On my monitor, at least, the bottom pics have a lot of splotchiness in the reddish-brown portions. Just my opinion. I'm a coin picture newbie, though.
If you haven't noticed, I'm single and miserable and I've got four albums of bitching about it that I would offer as proof.

I'm going to go against the grain here and say the top shots look best to me. The bottom shots have too much red for my taste - it looks like the white balance needs adjusting. The top shots look more natural on my monitor. The bottom shots also look about 1/3 stop overexposed - the top ones look dead on. The bottom shots also have noise from either sharpening or compression. This gives them an overall grainy or rough appearance. If you download the pictures and look at them at 200% the noise in the bottom shots stands out compared to the top ones.

The top photos look best on my monitor. The bottom pictures have a pink/red hue and do not look real.
