Saturday afternoon coinshop VAM finds

Some days at the coin shop, it's nothing. But every once in a while it's paydirt! The 1880 v39A makes my third one and I believe this one will grade MS where my other two are AUs.

Today's finds include. . .

1878 rev of 79 Short Leaf v203

1878 rev of 78 Broken D v195

1880 Clashed E v39A The Partial E

With over a foot of fresh snow in the driveway, I wasn't going anywhere today.

The 39A is a great score in any grade. But Mint State is what vammer's dreams are made of.

Thanks for the congrats. It's hard to get to too many shows where I'm at without having to make a weekend or something out of it. But patience with the local coin shop pays off every now and then! image

    Hi Jeff,

Would you show a picture of the full reverse of the VAM-39a. I have never seen one and I can't find a reference that shows one.

    Thanks,
    Charlie

That was me you outbid on that one. image No biggie; I went as high as I was willing to go.

I lost a VAM-1Z yesterday because I was babysitting and the kids distracted me from the auction. It went for less than $11. image

Sorry for the delay, I was out of town for a few days. Here's a picture of Chris Smolinski's coin, since it's the only one I have handy at the moment. . .

Yes, that ""die break"" across the ribbon bow appears on several different obverses mated with this reverse. VAM-1A2, Knobbed 8; VAM-39 (No clash), VAM-39A (E Clash), and a recent coin I sent to Leroy came back as 1A1 the break is oddly rounded off here. Leroy's theory is the wreath bow ""die break"" may originally have been a wire struck thru.
Interesting that the Mint made a lot of coins with that reverse and never noticed it.

If you find an 1880-P Morgan with that reverse, look closely to determine the vam. Clashed coins, though, are always 39A in my experience.
  • Cool info on the VAM-39A and the shared reverses!!
