To clean or not to clean

I was given several silver dollars, some seated and some Morgan, and they have a strange oil or something on them.
A few are in soft plastic holders and have a green tint on the edge.

Should I clean them? If so, how?

Maybe. Acetone only. No scrubbing, buffing or wiping. Let them air dry. Put them in air-tites and throw the soft flipholders away.

dont use any cleaner, only soak them in acetone, it sounds like you have pvc residue on them.

No, pure acetone. Buy it at Home Depot. Also, do a search on this forum for directions on how to do it, but briefly:

Immerse in acetone (a small closable bottle works well) . Let it sit for a while. Do not rub the coin. Just dip and sit on a clean cloth to dry (the acetone will evaporate). Repeat as necessary. Do it a well ventilated area, and remember acetone is very flamable...Mike

  • Gotcha. I will get some today. I will try to take some pictures and post them before I clean them.
    You all are the best.

Be sure to use a glass bottle with a paper lined lid and not a plastic lined lid, acetone will melt anything plastic including plastic bottles and lids. If you don't have a glass bottle with a paper lined lid use a ceramic dish as a cover and use in a well ventilated area.

    Good advice.
