Do a little dance in Brazil eh?

Don't forget to drink fresh coconut they have on ice.......way better for you and filled with vitamins. Cokes and that crap will make you more thirsty and not healthy.

See in South Florida we're more "evolved". You cannnot buy fresh coconut unless it's imported. Floridians are so intelligent they throw them away.

Have a nice trip. Wish we were going back to Asia........

    Later in the year.....

Here is a brief update on the shows final day Sat. What could have-should have been a great national show is basically RIP . Rest In Peace .. By Sat 80 percent of the dealers were gone . Actually the crowd started to come in around 11 am yet murphys law yet another disaster. Seems a fire alarm sounded. ALL customers were asked to leave . Heck dealers were not going to leave their coins - so what if we blow up LOL. .on top of this after tha all clear false alarm was given they could not shut off the alarm ... Add to this all the collectors who came and so the empty bourse said they would not come back ...and that's after they got a free u s silver eagle... As a dealer I do have to say that I had agreat show but I was the exception. NGC noted they will return but not offer grading. Stacks will return with an even bigger booth. Many local dealers could not even cover their reduced LOCAL booth cost... Only a major overall can save this show in the future and I am not sure that thiw wii take place. Word from the in the know is now is the time to sell gold and buy silver but no one has the magic crystal ball so be careful . Some NEWPS wii be up on Mon... PS its only partly cloudy and 80 degrees here. Oh do I no want to go back to NY

    It was very quiet.

I agree that RIP sums it up best.
  • one word - SUCKED

I went Thurs. around noon and it was a snoozefest. Many dealers hadn't shown up yet, or were leisurely unpacking. Most material was gold, no interest to me. Overall - I was thoroughly disappointed. I expected more. Certainly not a FUN type of show.
Everything I write is my opinion.

    Looking for alot of crap.
  • I was sorry I couldnt make it but after reading thread this I dont feel so bad.

The place was a complete ghost town on Wednesday, dealer set up day. I arrived at 2:00 PM (doors opened at 12:00), pumped $7 into a parking meter expecting to stay till close, and left an hour later. In hindsight, I probably should have gone through the Heritage lots, but I didn't. Thursday was busier, but many dealers clearly didn't bother showing up even though they paid for a table. Friday was another bust. Collectors were far & few. Many dealers left very early Friday to head to the weekend show in Orlando. I also heard that a lot of dealers attended the Las Vegas show at the Plaza instead of coming to WPB. I didn't even bother going back today.

Overall though, I personally had a great show. I cherrypicked the $h!t out of every table I sat down. Bought a total of 40 coins. Most in NGC or PCGS slabs. Granted, I had to pay over greysheet ask for some of the higher grade PCGS & NGC stuff, but you take what you can get. Unfortunately, I had left my VAM encyclopedia at home on Thursday. image I had my laptop with the updates but not the basics. So I went around and asked at least 20 dealers if they had one I could look at, or even buy. Not a single VAM book in the house. In all honesty, I could not be happier. image

I didn't write the variety down on all of the coins as I picked them, so here's a partial list.

    1885 Morgan VAM 1E Raw MS63 (I-2 R-6 variety)
    1885-O Morgan VAM 17 NGC MS63
    1888 Morgan VAM 7A Die State 2 NGC MS64
    1891-S Morgan VAM 3 Top 100 PCGS MS64 (SWEET)
1902-O Morgan VAM 26A SUPER CD PCGS MS65 (condition census coin)
1904-O Morgan VAM 4B "Trigger" SUPER CD PCGS MS65 (condition census coin)
    1904-O Morgan VAM 22A NGC MS64 (an I-3 R-6 variety).
    1904-O Morgan VAM 33 (formerly VAM 28B) NGC MS63
    1904-O Morgan VAM 33 (formerly VAM 28B) PCGS MS64
1921 Morgan VAM 9 "Dot below wing" PCGS MS64
1921-D Morgan VAM 1N NGC MS65 ("Unicorn") (condition census coin)
1921-D Morgan VAM 1D Raw AU
    1921-S Morgan VAM 1I NGC MS64
    1923-D Peace VAM 1AR Die Break - Raw MS63 (I-2 R-6 variety)
    1924 Peace VAM 1A "Bar D" Top 50 - Raw MS63
    1924 Peace VAM 1A "Bar D" Top 50 - Raw MS62
    1926-S Peace VAM 4 "Dot Variety" Top 50 - Raw Lock 63/shot 64

I ran into Ash Harrison on the bourse who showed me a 1900-O VAM 5 "micro-o" that he cherried out of a local dealers junk box. I picked through that dealers slabbed coins about three weeks earlier but never bothered to go through the junk. Oh well. image It would have been nice to snag a contemporary counterfeit so cheaply.

    Regarding Palm Beach:

What are the factors that is hurting it most?

    (1) Sandwiched between Long Beach and Baltimore?

    (2) Location of the show? Would Orlando have done any better?

    (3) Is more than one major show in Florida too many?

    (4) Not a cheap time of the year to travel and stay in hotels in Florida?

    (5) Set up of show and proximity to hotels, etc. ?

    (6) Other reasons?

Yes, and on the same weekend as a show in Orlando as well as the big coin show at the Plaza in Las Vegas.

<< <i>(2) Location of the show? Would Orlando have done any better? >>

The location of the show is terrible. Many dealers I spoke with said flying into WPB airport is difficult and the hotel rates in the area are astronomical. Orlando is a major hub with hundreds of inexpensive hotel accommodations.

<< <i>(3) Is more than one major show in Florida too many? >>

Not at all. People from all over the country enjoy a trip to the sunnier climate during their winters. A working vacation and great tax write off.

<< <i>(4) Not a cheap time of the year to travel and stay in hotels in Florida? >>

West Palm Beach is never cheap.

    (

<< <i>5) Set up of show and proximity to hotels, etc. ? >>

    Exactly.

    (6) Other reasons? >>

Most of the dealers did not set up but there were some good buying to be done.
I seldom check PM's but do check emails often jason@seated.org

Buying top quality Seated Dimes in Gem BU and Proof.

Buying great coins - monster eye appeal only.
  • Well, for the people that brought coins to sell, they were able to sell a lot of coins. All of the dealers were trying to buy their way out of the show it seems. However, 5 hours was plenty to spend there and get everything done that was to be done.
The show has a few major problems:

    1. Why should a corner table cost a major dealer 750 and an 8 foot table cost 200 to a local dealer?

    2. It's very difficult to get into West Palm Beach and when the host hotel is 1/4 mile away alongside a fairly major highway with no cabs or sidewalk in site that's a problem. On top of the fact the rate was $240 per night!

    3. Fort Lauderdale is a much more major airport.

    4. Coin crime seems very high in south florida lately, making security very difficult. Presence of the postal service may have been a good addition for shipping coins.

The weather was awesome, seafood was great, and it's a great region to have a show...just make it affordable and not in such a high rent building and district.

  • Isn't this a fairly new show? I seem to remember a thread about this show when it first started that there were already too many shows.

Other dealers and I tried to be as optimistic as we could about the Palm Beach show, but an optimistic report for the show is impossible. At least 1/3 of the dealers who had bourse tables never showed up and many of the Florida dealers planned to leave the show on Friday for the Orlando/ Central Florida show in downtown Orlando. With the exception of Scarsdale Coin, every dealer I spoke to had a very negative experience, and most of the travelling dealers plan to not return for the next show. The public attendance was poor, and the supply of free coins that were given out to attendees still have leftovers.

The hotel situation was definitely detrimental for the show. There were almost no hotel rooms available in Palm Beach County for less than $230 per night.

It also isn't fair that a table for a local dealer is 1/4 the cost of a bourse table for an out of state dealer.

The people/organization operating the show are some of the most disorganized folks I have ever had the experience of interacting with. Dealer registration was a free-for-all filled with confusion.

I was only in attendance on Wednesday and Thursday. I attended another coin show in Las Vegas earlier today, and that show was much better.
