If a coin is sent to NGC, do they automatically put in an NCS slab if they determine it's a problem coin?

Nope. Unless instructed otherwise, they bodybag it.

I think the reverse is true tho, if you submit to NCS if it's a no problem coin they kick it up for a smallish fee.
at least that's the impression I got reading the web site long ago.

might want to call 'em ?

They will not. You can, however, submit your coins to NCS for details grading and if the coins are no problem examples, they will transfer them to NGC for grading at the most economical tier for the specific coins you submit. The transfer fee is $3 per coin. They don't do this the other way for some reason.
