I should have also clarified that this is just with natural light, and no photo editing or lighting enhancements. Thus the title "in your hand."

Nice '42 cameo - I have one very similar in a PCGS 4cam holder.
Here is my 38 cameo - cracked out of an ANACS non cameo holder and submitted to PCGS. Came back a 65 cameo. (I thought I deserved a YOU SUCK for it - but didn't get one)

Thanks Chris, and Cameonut - YOU SUCK (unofficially that is!) There are some great ones hiding in ANACS holders that often get overlooked.

Here's my 38 (there's just a shade of haze on the reverse, but doesn't look as bad in person as this photo makes it):

This one would knock you out in person. 37's don't come like this. Even the ones with cameo designations!

I don't think any exist in DCAM, period. Now if PCGS grades one in DCAM, that is a different question!image

Your cams rock. I like every one of them.
    Really really hard to find.

I have never seen a prewar dcam or one that even approaches dcam.

    very nice coin

what type of lighting do you use to destinguish CAM/DCAM on copper?

I have a very difficult time telling between regular red -

what criteria do you use to tell if the coin is raw?

I took all of those photos this morning in natural light, and did nothing to the color of the pics after I downloaded them. Not direct sunlight, but near the window. Pretty scientific, eh?image

I love cameo lincolns from this period. This is back when the cameo surfaces didn't look all sandblasted and grainy but just nice frosting on a coin. The 1942's are the best ones for cameo. I remember a few years back I bought 4 cameo 1942's (PR64-65) Red's for about $30 each since no one paid a premium for them! They look just like your 1942. Those were the good old days. LOL

I think there is one DCAM 1942. I know they're out there.

Thanks for the pics! Loved them.
  • As of this date, PCGS has not designated any 1936-42 Lincolns as dcam. NGC lists five ultra cams--3 1937s and 2 1942s. Since NGC cameos from this period typically have less contrast than those from PCGS, I suspect that none of the NGC ultra cams would cross to PCGS.

cool. What are the pops on cams for this era of cents?

  • Very few, relatively speaking. I'm too busy to look them up right now, but you can go to the PCGS and NGC pop sites and look up the figures. No registration is necessary. I do know that the great majority are '42s. I have no idea as to ANACS totals, but I'm sure there couldn't be many. PCI cameos are overgraded and feature little contrast.

These are the PCGS pops. I don't consider the NGC pops worthwhile data in this area. Not to say none of the NGC coins are cameo, but that the pops are not useful since NGC has such a low threshold for the designation on the 36-42 proof Lincolns.

  • I saw Doug's coins last week in person. I held them in my hand. The 42 is an awsome cameo and is the equal of any one I have seen from 50 thru 54, better than most of those. All dates are exceptional, especially in person! He has an exceptional set of cameo Lincolns and an exceptional set of very early matte proof Lincolns. The two 1909's that he has are breathtaking beauties with lovely original toning encircling the portraits. All are to die for but those two make me lose sleep at night! Thanks to Doug for letting me hold them in my hands!

Man Doug, that 1937 has a date that simply glows!

  • Side note: A PCGS PR64 1942 cameo Lincoln recently sold on eBay for $950! It may have been a very strong cameo, of course. For what it's worth, the coin currently lists in the PCGS Price Guide at $550--though moving up.
