1866 seated half - does it need a bath?

stev32kstev32k Posts: 2,098 ✭✭✭
Here are two sets of images of a raw 1866 seated half. The first set shows how the coin looks under normal light. It is pretty dark and has a dull almost chocolate color overall on both sides. The second set shows the coin has luster that shines though when it is turned just right. There is not a mark, hit, or scratch visible anywhere on the coin to the naked eye. There appears to be a small something in the left obverse field in the first photo, but I can't see it with a 10X loupe. My question is does the coin look like it would benefit from a trip to NCS to get a bath and get rid of the dark color?

Nice coin as is. Would only get worse by playing with it. The first set of photos makes the coin initially looks MS63-65ish. Those are very flattering pics. The 2nd set of photos makes it look AU with the high points shiny (lightly polished). Amazing what photography can do.

Imo the first set of photos gives the appearance of ample mint luster all over the coin except for a large right obv field break. The 2nd group leaves no doubt that the coin only has a smaller amount of luster left and is well circulated.

    Don't touch it.

Decent colors and some luster coming through here and there...leave it.

leave it... I think you will regret doing anything to this coin. If you really do not like it, sell it and replace it with another. Just for the record and without seeing the coin, I tend to agree that it was enhanced years ago and has toned. A second dip would really be counterproductive.

I have to agree with roadrunner's comments.
Second picture, while flattering (IMO) colors now stand out, make the coin look like an AU.
This might not be the case if it were to be sent in, why chance it?
It sounds like you are uncomfortable with the way the coin looks now.
My advice, do not give it a bath, sell it & buy one you do like....probably easier said than done.

It looks likeit could be a retoned coin from an old cleaning, not bad at all. Certainly leave it as it is ,nice coin.
  • nice looking coin, leave it alone and appreciate it

VERY well struck for the issue. Does it look like a possible circ. proof in hand? I vote no to the bath. K

Put me down of the "no bath" side.
