What if you paid $4000+ for a coin in a PCGS holder that didnt match the grade?

What would you do if you bought a coin for almost 5 GRAND in a PCGS holder that you felt wasnt the grade PCGS assigned to it?

I finally purchased a coin that I have wanted for quite some time via the web. When i get it in the mail today, I noticed that there are imperfections on the reverse that i feel make the coin not suitable for the grade listed on the holder. I was a bit underwhelmed... almost upset about it. It is a POP 20 coin... and its taken me quite some time to wait for one to come for sale.

I know darn well that I would have submitted this very same coin, it would not have achieved the grade that is on the holder.

I really dont want to mention what type of coin it is because I suppose it doesnt matter.. I am only looking for opinions on if I should just keep the coin, since I wanted it so bad or call PCGS.

Does the seller have a return policy?

If you don't like the coin, send it back. If you are not happy with it now, you will not be happy with it in the future.

    Michelle:

If you can return it, do it.

If you can't, then definately submit it for Guaranteed Grade Review to PCGS.

I've done it once, and PCGS agreed the coin was overgraded. They compensated me quite fairly for the difference between what I paid for the overgraded coin, and what the value of the new and lower grade was.

They might not agree, of course... but that's a bridge to cross when and if it happens.
    When in doubt, don't.

  • If you can't return it then definitely go for the grade review.

They have been very fair on the few I have had to send in. It did take awhile though.

I agree with those above. Return if possible. Send for grade review otherwise. Only deal with problem of if they give it the same (or BETTER!) grade.

Good luck. I know how much of a let down it can be when a coin is not as nice as it looked.

Take action asap as everyone has suggested. A glaring reason in the shortcomings of buying sight-unseen...regardless of pops.

There are rare occurences where the pop # is the driving factor regardless if the coin is overgraded.....as long as it is acceptable looking in appearance. But with a pop of 20 I don't see that here.

IMHO, some coins are over-graded and some are certainly under-graded. I feel I have some coins that are DEFINITELY under-graded, but I love the coin for itself, so I'm in no hurry to try to put a new number on the label. My point is, you need to put your thumb over the grade at the top and just look at the coin itself. If you're not happy with the actual coin, and there are things about it that bother you upon first inspection, this will only continue to be an issue and you'll find yourself looking at the aspects of the coin that bother you each time you view it. Rather than simply enjoying the coin.

  • if you are not happy with the coin now you never will be! if you are able to return do so immediately! otherwise grade review would be only other option ( besides finding someone else to sell to and get your money back but would rather see a bad coin reduced to the grade it deserves)
