Anyone here still use dail-up?

We went up to my wife's grannys house today and I had an auction I was watching that was ending at 2:00. The ride is an hour and a half but we left with plenty of time to get there and we even stopped and ate breakfast. Anyway, we got there with more then enough time to spare. So, we walked in talked for a bit then I asked to use her computer. She has DIAL-UP!image I was like uh-oh, I now only have 10 minutes to get this computer ( 51% free space left image ) to connect and then log onto Ebay. To make it worse she has Walmart as her internet provider at a cost of $8.00 a month. I connected, got to Ebay was promptly kicked off by the provider, logged back in, got back to Ebay, went to "My Ebay" page and I missed the auction by 3 minutes. It took me 13 minutes just to get to Ebay! I was bummed to loose an auction I didnt even get a chance to bid on. I lost because of "technical difficulties". I feel real bad for people that still use dial-up.
In fact this should have been included in that thread from a few nights ago titled "ebay, do's and donts"

It's one of those things that once you have (DSL/Cable), you will never go back!

  • I still use dial-up. Just haven't decided to shell out the extra few bucks for high-speed. Sorry, you missed the auction. Try sniping next time.

Thats what I intended to do. I win all my auctions that way. Never got a chance though.

I have regressed to dial-up. I live in the middle of nowhere. There is no cable & no DSL. I did have satellite internet service for about five years. Downloading was a snap, but uploading still went through the telephone line. I finally said nuts to that. I'm just not up for shelling out the cash for the system that uses the satellite for incoming and outgoing data. I'll tough it out for a while.

  • Sounds like the computer is more to blame then dial up itself. I went through the same thing on a computer with cable at the time, but the computer was sooooo slow that using cable didnt make a difference. I got to my store with 15 minutes to spare, but it took 20 minutes just to get the computer to turn on and get to aol and then on line...........uggggghhhh.........the best thing I ever did was added more memory what a diff. I now also use Final Bid software to bid on items, but I must say so far although it works at times, it isnt fool profof, as I bet its missed bidding 10-20% of the time, which isnt acceptable, but its free to use. You can also use sites like auction sniper, where you pay 1 % but that site only failed me once.

My in-laws were in the same boat (they live out on a acreage) had dial-up and then got satellite but still had to have the extra phone line with it and uploading sucked. Then they found out about a broadband wireless internet service provider.. It's through a dish as well but no phone line is needed. It's faster than my cable connection. Maybe look into it.

Im not real sure what you would call mine its not cable or dsl. It is provided by the local utility company in a project they started about 2 years ago. It is supposed to be all fiber optic, It is super fast, I beleive 3megs or so. I get internet, hi def tv and telephone all on the same line.

I don't do a lot of downloading/uploading, so it's not a big issue with me. And I snipe my auctions, so there's no issue there either. I guess I'm just not a big spender. image

I have dial-up ! and we are so frustrated we moved from california to oregon last year. we moved here so we could spend more time with our kids and try to give them a better life. I can tell you dial -up is killing me!!!!!!!!!!!!!! My hair line is receding becuase of dial up. any body with dial up I fill your anger but living in oregon people think out- houses are room additions.
  • Dial-up...........you mean there's something else?
Seriously, I have dial-up and it's no big deal for me. But now that I think about it, I guess I could be considered to be still living in the stone age.

    1 - No dial-up.
    2 - Don't do cell phones.
3 - No satelite, cable or dish-type TV systems.
    4 - I still collect mainly NON-GRADED cards.......for fun, not profit.

The alternatives to dial up in my part of the world still cost 4X what dial up cost.............I will continue to use dial-up for now.
