How to go about selling coins here?

I tried selling coins on this website, and the event turned into a disaster. None of the intial buyers followed my instructions, and a coin even ended up being damaged. What are the common practices in selling coins on this website? I tried to have the buyers post offers, but no one was willing to do this. I only received pms, rather than offers in the thread as instructed. Do CU users consider this method of selling rude? I felt that this was the best way of selling the coins; the coins were toned, so a strict price could not be set. I would have simply sold them on ebay, but I have no feedback. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    as Stman says....LOL

Post them on the b/s/t board with decent pics and your asking prices. State insured shipping and handling charges as well or include them in with your prices. State your accepted methods of payments also.

You generally know what you will accept for them......so, price them. You will still get dealers who PM with lowball offers though.

I know that I buy through the BST and prefer it....but I also don't like to jump through hoops and play games. If you want "bids" in the thread, I won't bother. I just ignore that thread and likely any others once I see that style.

When you say "buyers didn't follow your instructions"....what do you mean? If I buy a coin, then the only damn instructions I care about is "how do I get you the money I owe you....and get me the damn coin". What other instructions are there? Why was the coin damaged? Was it being returned? How else can a buyer damage a coin?

    Fact is, this isn't Ebay.

You want to sell coins, it's just like the bourse.

Tell people what you want for 'em. Only 3 possible answers.

Sold. No. I'll give you X.

    It's free. Don't complain.

    It's simple.

Sorry, yes a strict price can indeed be set. Many folks just don't want to state a price they are willing to accept, hoping someone will bury themselves first with a stupid money offer. I rarely will ever make an offer. If you're selling.... price it.

They're toned so you can't price them eh?image

Link to the thread being referred to.

Bochiman, if you read the thread it will explain what went on and how the coin was damaged. It's not too big of a deal really though just some misunderstandings and misconceptions. With a little work you (gamr0n) will be a good seller.

You're the seller, so it's up to you to set the price. If you don't want to do that, then go elsewhere; this isn't an auction site.

    I just read that p8nt....

I think the key lessons are:
    * Learn the accepted practices before you jump in with both feet.
    * Become a better plastic cracker image
    * Most people here want to see a price and then they may, or may not, buy/dicker
    * When you want to sell.....make sure you are available and know how to use the tools at your disposal (PM function)

You failed to mention in this thread that you were the one to damage the coin.

OK to start off with this Forum "U.S. Coin Forum" is not to be used to Buy or Sell coins. It is for discussion of coins and the collectting of coins.
On the "Buy, Sell and Trade Forum" the established proceedure is.
    1. The seller lists his coin, sets a price, and methods of payment, and shipping charges.
    2. Buyers respond by PM this ensures their privacey.
    3. Replying to the listing is called bumping and is not considered acceptable.

Its OK to talk about selling coins here; just not to offer for sale here. Put your items up on the BS&T board; generally its best to put an asking price either based on current market value or your cost basis. Also I think its best to keep your offers/counteroffers confined to PM's; no need to air one's wheeling and dealing/negotiating on the forums.

  • You might have had a better time selling the coins if you had accepted or declined reasonable offers instead of giving no response at all and then a month later PMing the buyer to ask them to "bid" in the thread.image
