Who is in favor of changing the cent after Lincoln has been on it for 100 years and............

for those of you who are in favor of limiting ABE to 100 years, what new designshould be on the 2009 cent?

100 years seems ok to me, however I doubt 2008 will be the last Lincoln. 2009 should have an obverse of Lincoln and should have a wheatie reverse with a small portion of the coins having VDB on the reverse. I like the idea of having 2009 P, D & S VDB cents along with non VDB cents. Think of the fun that collectors and the public will have looking for the VDB cents.

Have a big blowout in 2009 and then eliminate the denomination entirely.

I'll bet you one hundred of those Lincoln cents that never happens, not in 2009 anyway, nor soon there after.

  • This is what they should do... eliminate the cent. Put Lincoln on the $1 coin, quit printing $1 bills. Move Washington to the $5 bill...
  • Why would we want to kill Old Abe a second time??

Having said that, I think we should definitely kill the denomination. They're useless for anything but collecting, and there are untold billions still in circulation, so they should just not be produced anymore. We have enough to last us until electronic money takes over completely, IMO.
If you haven't noticed, I'm single and miserable and I've got four albums of bitching about it that I would offer as proof.

SanctionII, I agree with you 1000%. but, I would like the SAME old style Obv. used on the last 1909. Then, retire the cent. Despite the Business world BS about things costing us more and that we will not but as much, Australia has not had a cent coin in many years and seems to be working just fine without it.

  • put wheaties back on the 2009 centennial design, and then revive the flying eagle.

  • They should redesign Lincoln like they are doing with the Nickels, then put the wheaties on the back.

But to the comment of changing the $1 from bill to coin, oh god that would stink. I went to London for a weak, and since their $1 (pound) is a coin, it is a big pain in the a** to carry around. The bill is so much easier to handle..

too much politics. I'll be we will be stuck with a Lincoln cent, just as Jefferson is still on the nickel.

No more dead people...PLEASE! How about the Statue of Liberty or the Liberty Bell with Wheat reverse. I like the idea of the flying eagle coming back.

Continue the cent in 2009 but put Licoln's head on both sides. A two headed penny. Or take coppercoins print of VDB and put that on the Reverse and have Lincoln Looking right at you on the Obverse.
How about starting a series of pictures of Lincoln with other people shaking hands on the front and a picture of the Red Book on the reverse opened to a page on Lincoln Cents.
How about a six sided penny. That way the Mint wouldn't stop making the penny but since it couldn't be used it would just fade away.

  • Finish off the cent and announce the re-emergence of the 2-cent piece to take it's place. Sort of a compromise on the discontinuation of the penny and the 'rounding up/down' issue. Take it to the nearest
even-money level instead of the 5 cent level.

I like the flying eagle idea, too.

Eliminate it after 2009 for circulation, but continue making original relief, copper specimens for annual sets. Lose the Lincoln Memorial reverse and use something artistic instead.

Put Lincoln on a $1 commemorative in 2009 and end the cent.

I would be in favor of either changing the design, or ending the denomination. I doubt, however, that we'll ever see another depiction of Liberty on a circulating coin.

I like the idea, but on the 09-S, put VDB in the silver proof set, and no-VDB in the clad proof set.

    Tim

Edit to add: They could also have VDB on the pennies in the satin finish mint sets and no-VDB on pennies released for circulations. End the series with six different examples of the wheatie (this should screw it up for those collectors that stopped collecting pennies in 58).

Food for thought, will 2009 be the hundredth year of the Lincoln cent or the 101th year?

Stick it with a fork, the fat lady's singing and Elvis has left the building.

Make it for mint and proof sets only until 2009 when the old reverse and metallic composition is used for one final blowout.

I'm surprised that no one has mentioned that the designs for the 2009 cent has already been legislated, and if the denomination isn't dropped, the post 2009 design has also already been legislated.
