Will anyone be bidding on items from the Samuel Mills Damon collection??

keetskeets Posts: 25,351 ✭✭✭✭✭
I noticed the ad in CW and recall reading about the collection several months ago. Mr. Damon passed away around 1935, if I'm not mistaken, and requested that his Numismatic holdings be held in the bank vault in Honolulu for 70 years. The auction will be held March 23rd in New York City and contains a vast array of items that can be seen at the link. The CW ad shows a picture of an 1876 Proof Set in the original presentation case, complete from One Cent through Twenty Dollars!!!

    That's a pretty cool idea.

  • I'd love to bid, but that Hawaiian stuff will be sooooooo far out of my price range .

A lot of territorial gold. I wonder if Damon sought them out, or if he actually pulled them from circulation at his bank?

    Interesting collection.

From the looks of it, many of the silver coins didn't take well to 70 yeras in a Honolulu vault. Undertsandingly, much of the gold looks to be in better shape after its storage.

I'd really like to hear the thoughts of someone who gets to see the proof set in-person....Mike

Wow! Why so many bulk lots of Bust coinage? One lot has 13 bust half dimes, another has 67!! Bust half dollars! What could be in those lots? Perhaps worth a look see?

This proof set is not too shabby, either:

  • This sale will bring tons of money just because its fresh to the market. Too bad the impressive feeling hard cover catalogue is really poorly catalogued if you read it and images are only subpar. Guess this is what happens when you dont have in house experts in coins....

Getting Doyles to auction this collection off was the equivalent of having McDonalds cater your daughters wedding. Like many things here in Hawaii, most of us out here feel that it was an "inside connection" that got the coins to Doyles. Remember that this collection was supposedly the one that had an original roll of every S mint coin from 1892 to the mid 1930's.... A dealer here on island has seen those coins... I wonder where they are now?

    Hmmm...???

Wanna bet a couple of certain grading parties are drooling right now?

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

A real bummer this collection will not be sold via a more familar auction house.
  • I am sure the coins will do well as they are fresh. however read the terms and conditions of sale carefully, as doyle is a fine art auctioneer, not coin auctioneer, which means you have even fewer rights....

OK, it's probably me but many of these coins look dull, lifeless and no appeal. Is it the photos which are poor or do they really look like that? They remind me of those "shipwreck effect" coins from NGC.

    I agree. Nobody should bid.
