She polished it up real nice, so it must be a 65.

    How to make an MS-65:

    1. Start with a VG coin.
    2. Clean and dip the holy hell out of it.
    3. Put a big gash into the reverse for good measure.

Bonus points for printing a label and putting it into a Coin World holder.

Some may consider this coin MS-67!!!***

Can someone please explain to her that she is high?

  • I sent her this:

"This is MY determination based on the ANA Coin Grading System"

You obviously dont know how to read then. The coin is no more then a polished up, ugly VG. Sorry.

The sad thing is people are bidding on her other coins.
    5.00 S&H too
  • The seller has 100% positive feedbacks, so you can not go wrong with the seller.

  • So irritating. What bugs me is seeing all those auctions with "LUSTER!" in the title, and then you see a dull coin like the one in the auction posted here.

    I love this line.

<< <i>It is ABOVE AVERAGE, brilliantly toned and has very few contact marks on the surface or rim. >>

That looks more like a big scratch to me. Very sad grading skills too.

Are you sure 100 points is enough? If that is a 65 then you would need to make it out of 300.
  • RKKayRKKay Posts: 3,015 ✭✭✭
You guys missed it. She doesn't say it's "MS65." She says it's "MS -65."image
  • Her response to my question: "Did you soak your attitude in vinegar!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    XXXhole."
"Everyday above ground is a good day"

  • Wow, even I know that is dipped etc, and Im just an amatuer! No way does that coin look right.

    GET A ROPE!!!!
  • ANOTHER RESPONSE FROM HER :

"Yes, all of a sudden after they have been up for auction for a week, I got a bunch all at once. Believe me I really appreciate being given info. like this because I am NOT a coin dealer, nor did I ever claim to be. I have a copy of the ANA Coin Grading system and under choice uncirculated, it clearly states: An above average Uncirculated coin which may be brilliant or lightly toned and has very few contact marks on the surface or rim. To me, though cleaned, they look lightly toned. I did not intentionally try to mislead anyone and some of the emails I received were SO NASTY and unnecessary. I'm working on revising my description now to please all the nasty ebay critics who have nothing better to do then insult a seller who made an honest mistake."
"Everyday above ground is a good day"

  • Just for fun I looked at her other items---she has a whole run of Lincolns 1909 thru the 20's---all just like this one.

Not unless you are asking the blind guy on the street corner, buddy.
  • She only had it listed as a 65 because Lincoln couldnt hear her giggle as she typed it without his ear image

I've often wondered if some of the worst grading and descriptions might actually be written my complete novices who've read just enough eBay listings to be dangerous. Appears to be the case here....

But it's really hard to feel sorry for her. If I were selling, for instance, an antique chest of drawers, I don't think I'd feel completely free to claim an age, or surface orginality, or manufacturer based simply on 3 minutes worth of "research" and creative writing. If someone said nasties to her, maybe she learned a lesson. image

  • I thought it had a shot to MS-68 DMPL.

  • If she really is a novice, I do feel sorry for her. It sounds as if she got in over her head and didn't understand the coin nomenclature. If all she got for her trouble was nasty responses (not saying they were, but that seems to be how she perceived them) then I think, unfortunately, she's been poisoned against the hobby, and won't go looking for any further information to educate herself.

I had planned to refrain from posting to the forum a bit longer, but this thread has caused me to curtail my break temporarily.

I've been in touch with the seller, who had been given the coins, knew virtually nothing about them and was hoping to raise some $ as a stay at home mom. Yes, she (UNKNOWINGLY) listed them at silly grades and included comments which were way off base.

However, at least HER "bad" behavior was unintentional. Frankly, it wasn't nearly as bad as some of what I have seen displayed in this thread. It would have taken about the same amount of time to try to inform, educate and help her as it did to ridicule her here, and/or through emails.

Next time you are tempted to make fun of someone and/or assume the worst about them, please consider using your superior knowledge about coins in a constructive, rather than destructive manner. Many of us were in her shoes, knowledge-wise at one time - that makes some of the comments here even less excusable. To my eyes, this is a sad thread.

I will now step down from my soapbox and resume my break from posting here.

    Mark,

    Sorry, I have to disagree....
".....I have a copy of the ANA Coin Grading system.... An above average Uncirculated coin....

I don't know where she was reading that from, I have the ANA Grading Standards book, as do many others here, but I don't see that under the "Lincolns" catagory.....where would that be?

Also, the ANA book has very nice pictures that would help all but the wackiest in determining a grade that is VERY close........certainly NOT MS65, which states "No trace of wear..."
There's no way you can make me believe this woman can't tell the difference between a cent with wear & one without.....just go to the local bank for a new roll of cents & compare.

"However, at least HER "bad" behavior was unintentional....", I don't buy that either.
Maybe she lacked numismatic knowledge, but when she drops catch phrases like 'LUSTER', 'RARE', 'BRILLIANT RED', etc.......that's NOT unintentional!

She may not have deserved all she got, but what ever she got, she brought it upon herself.

  • I think it's fairly clear that two things were going on:

    1) She had an idea what to say to sell her coin.
    2) She had no idea what those words actually meant.

She was obviously being unknowledgeable when she wrote the ad. She could perhaps be forgiven for that. But she wrote the ad in glowing terms that were patently, glaringly false. (As others have pointed out, the chances of her not knowing what a new Lincoln cent looks like are virtually zero.) If people e-mailed her with mocking or mean-spirited statements, I think that's unfortunate. But as for what goes on in this forum, criticizing (and yes, even mocking) people's Ebay listings is par for the course. Is it fair? Maybe not, in all cases. But I believe some of it is based on the fact that we were (and some of us still are) relatively new to the hobby, and we know how much damage can be done by someone passing off a worn piece of crap as MS-65.

Only the seller knows what her real intentions were. But it's hard for me to feel sympathy for someone selling a coin like that as MS-65, knowing that some poor sap could fall for it. At the very least, it was very irresponsible.

Has anyone mentioned that there are no bids on this coin, and most of her coins, yet she has yet to revise the auction to better state the real conditions of the coins?

I have not emailed her, nor do I intend to, I'm just of the opinion that she does know what she is doing & doesn't care.

    ADDED: Her return policy:
Return Policy Details: All Sales Should be Considered Final...HOWEVER...Under certain circumstances, I know things happen...after discussion with buyer, I will determine if a return will be accepted.

    image
  • I'd say the fact that her coins don't get bids, yet she leaves the auctions as-is, is proof positive that she's not being deceitful, but simply misinformed. I would think that someone who knew they were trying to pull a fast one would modify their auctions until the coins started getting bids. The fact that the coins aren't getting bids, and yet she hasn't changed the auctions, tells me that she doesn't think anything in the auctions is keeping people away. Now that she's gotten such "creative" feedback from people, maybe she will change them. Maybe...
